Trying to find out if the Hackaliah Theall in the 1810 Louisiana Census is the same person showing up in the mid and late 1700's in Westchester County, New York. I have data on that line going back to 1636.

Hi John, Thanks for the info on the Theall's. It's hard trying to locate information when you live so far from the source. I know the information I need is in Louisianna but finding the sites etc. is difficult. I will keep plugging away!

Debbie There is a major reference source for you in Lafayette at the Acadiana Research Center that I believe is tied into the University of Southwestern Louisiana. I'm sure you could get the number from information. Apparently they have all kinds of records. You can also write to the Division of Public Health Statistics, State Board of Health, PO Box 60630, New Orleans, LA 70160. In going through the Louisiana Census Books at my downtown library, the following Thealls were listed.
1810 - H. Theall 1820 - James Theall; Joseph Theall 1830 - James Theall; Joseph Theall 1840 - Mrs. F. Theall 1850 - Andrew J Theall; Ann Theall; Francis Theall; John B. Theall 1860 - No Thealls were shown 1870 - Ellen Theall; Harrison Theall; Henry Theall; Rufian Theall; Thomas Theall Note: Harrison was the only one listed from Lafayette. The others were from Franklin, Vermillion Parish, St. Mary's Parish, Abbeville and H. Theall (who I believe was Hackaliah was listed from Attakapas Parish. Hope this helps.

Debbie, I have alot of info on the Louisiana Thealls. I just inherited it from my father-in-law. This information has been difficult to disect. I understand that the Thealls originated in Rye and I have a very primitive family tree made by someone in the family that goes back to Nicholas Thele. It looks like Nicholas was born in Watertown, Mass in 1637 and died in Stamford, Comm in 1658. In my line I have been able to decipher up to John Theall who married Vancy Jopham. Do you have any other info? I'm willing to share all.

John,
I have a very primitive family tree made by someone in the family I'm not sure who. It looks like there were two Hachaliah's. The first was the son of Ebenezer and Ann. This Hachaliah was a Constable from 1742-1743 and married someone by the name of Mary. The second was the son of Joseph or Abraham (not sure which) and Hannah. This tree indicates that Hannah made a will in March of 1797 in North Salem. Hope this helps. Do you have any other info you'd like to share? I'm willing to share all.

Debbie, I would love to send you what I have but I can't figure out how. This system doesn't have a way to contact you personally at least not one that I can find. You can e-mail me at srtheall@bellsouth.net.

Mary Theall Thanks for the info on Hackaliah. The will that Hannah filed in North Salem in 1797 throws me off. I assume you meant MA. The last thing I ran across on www.genealogy.com showed a Hackaliah in the 1800-1809 census period in NY and then an H. Theall in LA in the 1810 census. I think that they were one and the same person. The Theall's of New England and New York seemed to have been Loyalists in the Revolutionary War and many were driven out to St. John's New Brunswick or some apparently came south to French Louisiana which became US territory in 1803. I am trying to find the lineage from LA to NY. I do know that the first Theall came to Salem, MA in the 1630's and Nicholas Theall was one of the original land owners in Watertown, MA in 1636. He and his son, Joseph moved to Stamford, CT and Joseph had a lot to do with surveying the area and making agreements with the Indian tribes of the area. The homestead of Joseph or his children was levelled about 30 years ago and stood on the Osborne Estate in Rye, NY at Theall Road at the Boston Post Road. Hackaliah's children, the one that I think came to LA, fought with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans (1815) and received land as payment for their services.

John, Thanks for the info. I'm sorry the info I sent confused you. I inherited this info from my father-in-law. He got it from his brother. This research was originally done back in the early 60's so what I have is very raw and I'm looking for clarification. Here's what I have: Nicholas Thele wife Elizabeth was in Watertown Mass in 1637 and died in Stamford, Conn. 1658. Nicholas and Elizabeth had two children Joseph (b. 1640) and Elizabeth (b. 1643 in Watertown). Joseph has the title of Capt. and it indicates that he moved from Watertown>Stamford>Bedford>Rye. Capt. Joseph Theall had one son by the name of Ebenezer b. 1660 d. 1750. He also holds a title of Capt. His wife's name was Ann. The tree indicates that Ebenezer was a yoeman, Rye and made a will in 1747. Ebenezer and Ann had 8 children - Charles b.1701 d. 1778 In 1728 was Justice of the Peace, wife Jumina b.1704 d. 1768. In 1707? he lived in the old house. Owned lot of land one mile square ext. to Blind Brook and partly bounded by Abraham's property, where the old house stands. He divided it all into four parts and gave one part to each of his four sons. (Blind Brook Cemetery for dates.) Joseph - second son "part of father's farm in Bund's? Nich "where I now live" partly bounded by Charles' farm. Hachalia - 3rd son was Constable 1742-1743, wife Mary. Made his will in 1760. His father had given him another part of his farm, northern part "where I now dwell". Sarah - 1st daughter wife of John Miller of Bedford. Mary - second daughter wife of Joseph Merritt Jr. of Rye. Susanah - 3rd daughter wife of Joseph Haight of the "Manor of Courtland" The manor was build in 1748 by Frederick VanCourtland, son of Jacibus and Eva VanCourtland. Hannah - 4th daughter not married at time of father's will in 1747. Will of father states "in consideration of the love, goodwill and affection which I have and do bear unto my youngest daughter, Hannah, I give her my negro boy, Jeffery, and my black fucoil? riding horse," etc. Abraham "youngest son" In 1747 record shows he sold land to brother Joseph. Charles the first son had four sons - Gilbert b1750? d 17? - 200 acres on Post Road. (copy of will of a Gilbert leaving all to 3 nephews and 1 niece named "Gray" could this have been this Gilbert or his cousin Gilbert son of Hannah?). Joseph - 2nd son - In 1751 he had a farm south of Gilberts "now Meads"? A great grandson of Capt. Joseph, he died in 1829. Was his wife Sarah? Church records show children of Joseph and Sarah were baptised in St. John's Episcopal Church Aug. 23, 1720, Ann, Margaret and Susanah. Thomas - 3rd son 1749-1837 was his wife Sarah or Ann? Abraham 4th son - Did he marry Marie Churchill? Hachaliah 3rd son of Ebenezer had 5 children - John, Sarah, Susanah, Mary and Gilbert. There is a notation under these sisters "evidently named for 3 aunts - did one of these sisters marry a GRAY?" Under Gilbert it reads "youngest son". Did he have three nephews and one niece by name of GRAY? There is also another smaller tree that names Hannah Theal "whose widow was she Joseph or Abraham? She made a will in 1797, (March) in North Salem! Hannah had 4 children _ Ebenezer wife Martha lived in No. Salem made will in 1822. Hachaliah Isaac (there was an Isaac b1796 - d1817) and Hannah. Ebenezer son of Hannah had 5 children Abraham, Amza or Amzi, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary. The end of the tree has a note "A Theall had a daughter Ann who married Richard Dyheman (Blind Brook Cemetery).
Well that's all I have on this primitive tree. All the questions you see are actually on the tree. I have added no questions of my own of which I have many. The first of which is how does this tree tie into my husband's family? I guess I'll have to dig a little deeper.
I do have more info on Hackaliah. The page reads "Information sent me from Powell A. Casey 1945 Columbia St., Baton Rouge, La. 70808 - La. Hist. Quarterly, July 1945 - page 174 -- "Hackaliah Theall appears to had been the first member of the Theall family in St. Mary Parish La. in 1813; he owned a plantation with 4 slaves on Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish and he is said to have been one of the first men to cultivate sugar cane in that parish. By 1814 or 1815 Joseph and John Theall, probably the sons of Hackaliah were both planters on Bayou Teche. It was probably either Joseph or John who carried a letter for Levin Waites to James Cathcart from Opelousas on Feb. 25, 1819." I have other info but I'll have to dicipher it before I can send it to you. Happy hunting!!

Hachaliah and Mary Theall
Most of my information of the New England Theall's came from Mrs. Charlotte Theall Stafford of Quincy, MA. This info was relayed to my dad over 20 years ago. She may be deceased by now. She too mentioned that Hannah Theall had filed a will in North Salem, NY not MA on Mar. 19, 1797. Hachaliah's will was dated May 27, 1760 in Rye, NY. Charlotte had done a family tree in which she asked whose widow was Hannah, Joseph or Abraham? Her children were Ebenezer, Hachaliah, Isaac, and Hannah. Joseph and Abraham were children of Ebenezer, whose wife was Ann. He was born in 1660 and died in 1750. His will was made in 1747 in Rye, NY and he was a yeoman. Ebenezer was Joseph Theall's son who was born in Watertown, MA in 1640 and lived in Stamford, Bedford, and Rye, NY.
Hope this helps. I do have pretty good info from Charlotte that takes the family into the early and mid 1800's. Still would like to find out whether the LA Hachaliah is the same person from NY. Thanks
