Thiel is, I am given to understand, a German name. However, the Thealls, Theals or Theales (various versions) of early Salem, MA, Stamford, CT and about Rye, Westchester Co., NY probably derive their name from a place, Theall, in England. My own interest in the family is through the connection of the Loyalist branch in New Brunswick to my mother's family. That family, and many later connections, orginated before 1783 in Westchester Co., as did the Dickinsons, one of whom, Millicent Dickinson, married Charles Theall. While searching for material on the origins of Charles' family, I ran across a lengthy reference to the place, Theall, in England, but did not take notes. If, as is said, the family was in Salem in 1630, and later in Stamford and then in Westchester Co., they were following a series of movements consistent with what has become an extremely large and confusingly interconnected group of families, most of whom have their origins in England.
