Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
What a nice headstone! It does appear that there are a lot of differences here There is the two locations, the ages of JOhns birth and death, the occupations, and the having children in both places (unlikely) none of which are carved in stone (except in the headstone!!) so I wonder if they are the same ones too. There were several Thackeray families in the Rydale area, which have been there long into the late 1700s But I appreciate the HA info. Tell me why did you look in the HA records when you were searching Salton, was there a hint.............. I wonder what attached Francis and Mary Elmer to this couple... I see the names of the children of the above, and the Salton group are different consider naming patterns, as I have all of Joseph and Jeremiah children and they do not include the names like Rachael, Leah, Ruth, Sarah. Was there no marriage in the HA before ann was born in 1824 to John and Mary... not that there will be much info with that. Thanks Julia

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
I do notknow where my head was yesterday but today I found John born1785 in HA information He did marry Mary Dawson who was born Fiaxton NY and died in 1868 in Brawby Yorkshire. John died in 1878 in Butterwick NY. They had at least 13 children all in HA They were those names they were Elizabeth, Mary 1812 - 1814, William 1816-1831,Rachael 1817, Ruth 1817 - 1883, Leah 1819 -1890, John 1826 - 1905, Hannah 1828 - 1915, John 1831 -1831, Sarah 1834, George 1838 and Mary 1838. The census records I have on him are
1861 Census Brawdy, Yorkshire sub registration Hovingham John thackeray b abt 1787 in Huttons Ambo age 74 Mary wife born 1790 in Flaxton
1871 census Butteriwck Parish, Yorkshire England, sub reg district Hovingham Arthur Marshall 2 Grand Great nephew born Butterwick George T Marshall 10 months Grand Great newphew s/a Hannah Marshall 42 dau of John Thackeray born Brawdy Mark Marshall 46 b. Old Malton, abt 1825 Martha Marshall 10 Daughter of Mark and Hannah born Brawdy Ruth Marshall 11 daughter ofHannah born Brawdy abt 1860 John Thackeray 87 father in law born huttons Ambo NY
I looked up the first son of Francis JOhn born 1766 and missed this second JOhn. Hope this info helps. Julia

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
This still doesn't make sense because we have John Thackray and mary dawson buried in a grave in pannal st roberts, circa 1840.
It seems highly unlikely that there were 2 John Thackray and Mary Dawsons, getting married at more or less the same time.
I'll look at the census records when i get home after work and see if I can make any more sense of this.

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
Ok
So I looked into this a bit further. It seems that there were 2 John Thackray and Mary Dawsons together at least thats how it's looking.
So I found the 1841 census entries for Brawby and High Hutton. Together with the gravestone inscription we get a pretty confusing picture. The long and the short of it seems to be there were 3 John Thackrays and Mary, living around the same time. The Mary Thackray living at brawby looks like she was Mary Dawson before she got married. But equally so does the Mary Thackwray who lived in Pannal. I've no idea who the Mary Thackray living at high hutton was though. Also I've not been able to find the marriage between John Thackwray and Mary Dawson of Pannal. I guess its circa 1820 as that Mary Dawson was born about 1800.
If anyone reading this knows anymore about the families in question I'd be only too happy to hear from them.

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
I am a descendant of John Thackray & Mary Dawson of Salton (twice over). Census indicates that this John (the wheelwright) is for sure the John Thackray born in Huttons Ambo. Haven't managed to research further back than John's father Francis (as don't know where he came from). Had more success with Mary Dawson, daughter of William Dawson and Ann Frankland.

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
I know that Francis Thackeray did not live in HA before he married Mary Elmer Dec 4 1764, there are no thackerays that I found in HA going way back. They did have at least 11 children all in HA. My line is Joseph b. July 2 1769 and Fiona who posted before is of the Jeromya line. b. Feb 4 1776. My Joseph m Mary Horsley born abt 1767 probably in HA who died May 5 1808 in Swinton AppletonLeStreet. Joseph died Mar 27 in Peel County, Ontario Canada. Joseph had with Mary, William died 1807 in Appleton, Jane 1791 in HA >, Rest born APPleton, John H 1794 came with dad to Canada, Martha 1798 - died 1836 in Burythorpe, Francis 1800 - 1813, Joseph 1802 came to Canada, Mary 1808 - 1841 camewith her husband James Bentley to Canada, The Joseph Sr married again when Mary died to another Mary, maiden name unknown, and they had Francis, 1821, William 1822 who came to Canada, and Robert 1824 died 1825 all in Appleton. Second wife mary died May 25 1825. So Joseph and his three sons and one married daughter immigrated and farmed in Canada. Fiona's Jeramiah, born 1776 in HA married Dec 17 1798 in HA and had at least four children in HA 1799-1812. One Joseph born `803 married Mary Skelton born Coneythorpe in 1826 and they had at least 8 and her line ended up in Barlow, NY> through son Henry John 1841 in Falsgrave Scarborough, marries Elizabth Barn etc So this accounts for two of the sons of Francis and Mary Elmer. Joseph came from elsewhere to work in HA obviously but Mary Elmer parents MIGHT have been NewYear Elmer and Mary Rockliffe married 13 May 1725 Huttons Ambo, Yorkshire Newyear died April 13 1779 OR Mary Elmer born to John Elmer in AppleTon Le Street 20 October 1745. C135564 With Siblings Elizabeth 1740, Hannah 1756 and Margaret 1742 all in ALS to John
So Richard, Is my info about John and Mary Dawson children correct or not...... ya never know!!! Julia Canada

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
Hi, Julia, I am actually decended from John Thackray through his son John and then William who was my gt grandfather. John Thackray was a wheelwright and the family carried on with this line of work down to my grandfather William Lawrence who is discribed as an agricultural implement maker in some census's. John snr married Mary Dowson in Salton, HA is in the parish of Salton. My mother (95) has an extremely good family memory and has related to me the family line. I have a photo of John and Mary in old age plus one of the Brawby works whith, I believe John jnr alongside the workers there.

Re: Thackeray Malton area North Yorkshire 1750 +
Hi Julia
I never had any doubts about John Thackray being born in Huttons Ambo, and marrying Mary Dawson. There is plenty of evidence to suggest he is the son of Francis.
I can't put my hands on my family tree right now, but I did look into the Mary Elmer as being daughter of New Year Elmer & Mary Rockcliffe (just wanted an exotic Christian name!) as another relation had assumed that Mary daughter of New Elmer Elmer was the one that married Francis Thackray. However, when I looked into the parish registers, I found that this marry had died aged 13 yrs, so couldn't be "ours". I had come to the conclusion that our Mary Elmer is likely to be the one d.o. John xn in 1745.
