To Glen: You might start by trying to get death certificates for your Grandparents. There is a sight for Social Security Death Index it is http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi Try this site if you no approximatley where and when they may have died. If you know there names and I don't know how far back you go with them, but most Family History centers should have 1881 Bristish Census Index. Go to familysearch.org if you need to know the one nearest you. And there are a lot of Thackeray's from Yorkshire in the IGI and ancestral files at the library or this site. Good Luck I hope this helps. Another guy has a site I was just on. I went into genealogy.com and typed in Makepeace Thackeray and two sites came up, This site might help you.

I have traced my Thackeray / Thackray ancestors back to a Peter Thackeray born in the UK (in 1726 he was a churchwarden). His son was John Thackeray (born in Yorkshire 1694, died in Wighill 1748) and his son was also John Thackeray (born 1729). His son was also John Thackeray (born in Yorkshire 1758) he was a coachman. His son was also John Thackeray (born in Yorkshire in 1792). His son was John Thackeray born in London in 1818, died 1880.His daughter was Jane Thackray (name change)born 15 June, 1828 in London (Her siblings were:John, Charles, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas, Hannah James Arthur). She married my gg grandfather (William John Timms) on 25 December, 1849 in St. Botolph, Bishopsgate, London. They lived at 49 Skinner St., London (near St. Paul's Cathederal) at the time of the wedding. I have further info going further back on associated lines coming forward in the Timms line. Also of some other Thackeray lines (brothers of my ancestors at different points.) Does anyone feel that we may have a match? Regards Phil Timms

I have read your message about Thackray surname. My great grandfather and his family originate from Yorkshire. I have census info dating back to 1851 and at the moment I am looking at 1790 also. If you need any info or would like to share info please e-mail. Thackray on my 1851 census is actually spelt Thackwray! I believe the mistake was probably with the census collectors or maybe they decided to drop the W later. My Thackray's have quite a colourful history!
Regards Martine
