Hi Joe..I'm researching my family and came to Stephen Thacker..1842-1901.
I have a photo of his gravestone and a bunch of hints that I can't access. I've noticed he may have been in the civil war & also there might be a Coat of Arms attached to the Tree..Stephen was married to Emm S. Haskins. Margaret M. Thacker was their daughter. She was married to Melvin G. Adkins.Their daughter was Lois V. Adkins who married Merrill Rossen..I am their son..Stephen was my Great Grandfather..Thank you in advance for any info you might have..Sincerely, Maynard Rossen

I know there is a Thacker coat of arms floating around but there are numerous lines of Thackers living in the US (as proven by DNA) and I would be hesitant about "claiming" the coat of arms unless you could prove it belongs to your specific family.

However, for fun - go ahead and put it on a coffee mug and don't get too attached or too boastful.

Thank you Glenda!

An important point I made myself. And promptly caught grief for.... Heraldic coats of arms are NOT generic surname crests.

If (you) do not have direct lineage to the person whom it was assigned, (you) do not have right to claim it.

I'm curious about the DNA project...... I recently participated in the National Geographic Genographic program. Obviously not the same thing, but very interesting nonetheless.

Both FamilyTree DNA and Ancestry.com have a group of Thackers who are pooling their resources to further their research. The group on FTDNA is limited to those who have tested with FT; Ysearch.org and Ancestry allow Thackers to manually add their test results from other labs. We have a site which can be found on the Ancestry site, then go to the DNA tab, Thacker group. You may be able to get to it from MyFamily.com without a fee.

I have assembled a Excel spreadsheet with results of Thacker DNA tests from three or 4 sites and this can be downloaded from our public site. We would very much like to add your DNA if you would either send it to my personal email address or direct me to a site where I can find it on the Internet. I try to update this every 4 or 6 weeks as we receive new results. Currently we have about 25 participants and the majority of them appear to descend from a common partriarch.

Anxious to hear from you.

I realize this is an old post, but hope the email address is still current. I would love to have the Coat of Arms and the Thacker Line dating back to 1611 in the UK.

Thanks for your help.

Karl --

Hallelujah! Thank the genealogy gods for those who stand up for accuracy and truth in genealogical research.

Like you, I have tried to tell people that there is no one coat of arms for any family surname. They don't always believe me. However, it is my understanding that British coats of arms were personal to the individual so that a father and his sons would each have a different coat of arms.

Which is why I'm not sure about the accuracy of your statement that only those who can prove direct descent can claim the ancestor's coat of arms. If you can direct me to a source for this info, I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, I don't think it takes the fun out of genealogy to acknowledge the fact that the "Smith Family Coat of Arms" is NOT really "THE" coat of arms for ALL people named Smith. I agree that people don't like being told they are wrong -- which is what appears to have prompted the abusive outburst from another researcher. Unlike him, I'd rather know that I shouldn't represent a coat of arms as my own when it isn't.

Actually, when I see a coat of arms attached to an entire surname, I cringe! More often than not, that researcher's data is unreliable and unsourced.

Thanks for standing up for Truth In Genealogy!

And, --- do you have anything in your research about Margaret Thacker, b. 1823 in VA., who married George Drumheller in 1847 in Nelson Co VA? Margaret allegedly died in 1900.
Margaret had a sister, Catherine Thacker, b. abt. 1820 in VA who appears to have never married. I'm interested in identifying their parents.

Thanks!
