Classification: Biography
Surnames: Thackaberry, Tackaberry, Tackbary, Fernell, O'Neill, Rainsford, Devlin
I've been trying to trace my family's roots back ti Ireland for a long time and I think I've come up with something. My findings are listed below:

--------------------------------------------

The first record of Henry Tackberry (eventually of East Aurora New York) in N. America is on the Census of Upper and Lower Canada 1851. In this, he appears living in a boarding house in Logan, Perth County (Canada). The census notes that his actual residence was in the nearby Town of Elma. He was a laborer and I suspect he had a several week job in Logan.

There is an 1850 Baptismal Record in Elma http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com/FromDarlenePerrett/OtherR...
which reads:
"Willm Henry Tackaberry, Nath & Margt Elma Elma 2 Nov 1851 Elma Rev. Geo. Case"

Living in the Town of Elma, Perth County Canada ten years later is according to the 1861 Census is the same family of Tackaberrys:

Nathaniel age 35 born in Ireland
Margaret 35 "
Richard 14 "
Fanny 11 born in Canada
William H 9 mentioned in above birth record
Joseph 7 "
James 5 "
Thomas 1 "

This is a branch of the family that eventually settled to Lionshead, Canada. The family must have emigrated from Ireland c.1848.

Records of Tullow, Cty Carlow, Ireland show a Margaret Fennel (daughter of Edmund Fennel) marrying a Nathaniel Thackaberry in 1844, soon after giving birth to a son named Richard and then emigrating.

Also living in Tullow at the time was William Thackberry who married twice. The first time was to a Mary Rainsford (daughter of Henry Rainsford). Before dying young, Mary gave birth to a son named Richard Henry, who ended up inheriting the family farm at Rathgrass, outside of Tullow. William then remarried Elizabeth O'Neill, also of Tullow, and they had a number of children.

Nathaniel, Margaret, and their son emigrated to America in 1848. These are the people Henry Tackaberry was living with (listed as his permanent residence) in 1851 (see Census of Upper and Lower Canada 1851).

William and Nathaniel were both descendants of Henry Mark Thackaberry and his wife Mary. They could either be children or grandchildren. Henry Mark and his wife had a number of children: Anne (b. 1817), Jane (1819), Nathaniel (married 1844, Tullow, Cty. Carlow) , William (married 1845 Tullow, Cty Carlow), John (b. 1833), and Henry, WHOSE BIRTH AND DEATH DATES ARE NOT KNOWN. Henry the son is sometimes listed as dying in 1875 in Millbrush, Cty Kildare. Henry Mark is listed as dying in 1857 in the United States.

I believe that the Henry Tackbary (nee- Thackaberry), who was born in 1823 (see US Federal Census for East Aurora, NY 1860, 1870, 1880--- also New York State censuses for 1855 - 1893) was the brother of Nathaniel and William, and the son of Henry Mark Thackaberry. This makes sense in terms of the birth dates. It would explain why he was living with Nathaniel's family when he first came to North America: Nathaniel was his brother. It would also explain what happened to Henry, the missing child of Henry Mark and Mary.

PREVIOUS INCONSISTENT DATA FOR HENRY MARK

A number of genealogy sites list Henry Mark as emigrating to Canada in 1817 and dying in Canada in 1857. Henry Mark's mysterious child, Henry is listed as dying in Millbrush, Cty Kildare in 1875 (Cty. Kildare bordered Carlow). It seems likely to me that the 1875 death which was attributed to the younger Henry was, in fact, Henry Mark. Henry Mark's wife died in Wexford (another county bordering on Carlow) three years later, in 1878. Henry Mark fathered a number of children in Ireland after 1817 (baptismal certificates are on record). This would be a difficult feat if he were living in America at this time. Furthermore, it's difficult to imagine that after 30+ years of marriage and at least 6 children Henry Mark would suddenly decide to emigrate to North America while his wife, children, and grandchildren remained in Ireland. Death certificates for his children (those that I could find) show they died in Ireland. This part of the Tackaberry family owned a large farm in Rathgrass (near Tullow) in Cty Carlow. The Griffiths Valuation for Carlow County was taken c1851/52 and shows family members occupying houses in the area. Why would they emigrate?-- they owned a large plot of land. If the America 1857 death record were Henry Mark's, the man would have lived to be over 110 years old.
------------------------------------------

The 1861 Census of Lower and Upper Canada shows Nathaniel's family still in Elma, Canada, but without Henry. This is because Henry had gone off on his own in 1854, after marrying Bridget Jane Devlin and having his first son William in Canada (1853). He is listed on the New York State census with his wife and oldest son in 1855, living near East Aurora, New York and had been living in the country for 1 year at that point. In 1857 they had their second son in New York State.

Here is my revised family tree for the Tackaberry's who are descend from Henry Mark. I have not listed generations 2 & 3 for those of Henry Mark's children which are not involved in this account:

1. Henry Mark Thackaberry (died 1875) wife:Mary probably also Thackaberry (died 1878)

some genealogies list a "Richard" as father of Nathaniel and William. Most list "Henry Mark" as father

2. Anne (b.1817)
2. Jane (b. 1819)
2. Nathaniel(born c. 1820) wife Margaret Fennell
3. Richard b. 1848 in Ireland
3. Fanny b. 1850 in Canada
3. William H 1852
3. Joseph b. 1854
3. James b. 1856
3. Elizabeth 1858
3. Thomas b. 1860
2. Henry (b. 1823) wife Bridgit Devlin
3. William b. 1853 in Canada
3. John b. 1857 in USA
3. Mary b. 1858
3. Frederick 1862
3. Emma b. 1864
3. Nettie b. 1875
2. William first wife- Mary Rainsford (married c. 1840), second wife- Eliza O'Neill
3. Richard Henry b. 1836 (Rainsford marriage)
3. Samuel b. 1854
3. William b. 1855
3. Rebecca b. 1857
3. Anna b. 1859
3. James b. 1860
3. Nathaniel William b. 1863
3. Joseph b. 1868
3. Charlotte Mary b. 1869
3. Adeline Francis b. 1871
3. Emily Mathilda b. 1874
3. Frederick George b.1875

------------------------------------------

Reiterating, Richard Henry Thackaberry (son of William and Mary Rainsford) inherited the Thackaberry farm, which was located in Rathgrass, outside of Tullow in Carlow County. He married Anna Maria O'Neill, in 1886. Thus, the descendant of William's first wife married a relative of his second wife, further biologically connecting all the descendants of William. There were a number of marriages between the Thackaberrys, the Rainsfords and the O'Neills of Tullow. This part of the family remained in the Tullow, Cty Carlow area of Ireland.

The Henry Tackberry who settled in East Aurora is a descendent of Henry Mark.
