Don Manuel Gregorio de Tejada

I was doing research on Don Manuel Domingo Garcia de Tejada in the old Spanish records Archive at the old Ursuline Convent building in New Orleans. I became very excited to find the following records. Don Manuel Gregorio de Tejada was the King's accountant for the Royal Customshouse. There was a lot of information on him, his wife and children, plus his parents, etc. There were similiarities in his name and the Natchez Manuel and in his mother's name and the Natchez Manuel wife's name. Could this be an error in recording the info?

However, the dates, etc. did not correspond to the Natchez Manuel. So I learned that there this were two de Tejada's in Louisiana at this time.

Were they related? Probably not. I have since learned that the name de Tejada is probably not the surname of either Manuel. The Natchez Don Manuel's surname is probably Garcia and the New Orleans Don Manuel's surname is probably Gregorio.

However, there were at least two Spaniard de Tejada in Louisiana during the time Louisiana was goverened by the Spanish. Both had children. We know that our ancestor and his two sons stayed in Louisiana. I do not know what happened to the other de Tejada family. Do any of you have info on what became of this family. Are there still descendants of that branch in Louisiana?

In my Y'Barbo family history I have found the name Texada and have come up with zero in finding --but now see the Tejada is also spelling. The persons listed in the YBarbo Text are:
Maximillian Y Barbo m. Maria Lenicia Caro
11 Oct 1838 in Nacogdoches, Tx.
she is the daughter of Jose Tomas Caro and
Maria Gertrudis Texada. Did you find anything that would correspond to this information.

I have not seen the name Maria Gertrudis Texada in any of my research, that I recall.

In addition to Don Manuel Domingo Garcia de Tejada there is also Don Manuel Gregrorio de Tejada who lived in New Orleans during the same time frame. He was the Royal Customs House Accountant. You can find him and his descendants in the Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records published books at most genenalogical libraries. Are you living in Louisiana? If not, let me know and I will send you the info I have.

Don Manuel Domingo Garcia de Tejada resided in Natchez, MS. If you are interested in his descendants, I will be happy to help.

Waiting to hear from you. Bev

Surnames: Garcia de Texada, Gregorio de Tejada, Texada
Hi Beverly,
Thanks for sharing that info. Very interesting. I didn't know there was another Texada(Tejada) sent by the Spanish government. I wonder if they had the same father but different mothers. Here's why:
Spanish surnames work differently than in English so their surnames would have been "Garcia de Texada" and "Gregorio de Tejada". The mother's surname is the first one and the father's is what is after the "de" so it's important to consider the whole thing the surname for accuracy. In fact, many Hispanics are insulted if you go only by the part before the "de" because that's like calling them a bastard because you left off the father's surname.
Also, the "Don" is a title roughly equivalent to "Sir" so it's not part of the name, but it signifies that he was held in high esteem or upper class or something like that. (Given that he was sent by the government, that's enough reason to use "Don.")

Also, I know of two sons of Manuel Garcia de Texada, John and Joseph. I always thought Joseph left for the Texas (Austin area) and left no heirs. Do you know otherwise?

I'd love to know how we are related and what your racial background is. I am white and as a result, I know I am missing the part of the tree that includes those of African descent and I know they're out there.

I am descended from John Texada. Two of his sons, Lewis and Thomas, are both ancestors of mine.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, Beverly,

I'm descended from the Natchez Texada. What info do you have? Sorry for the brevity. I'm at work.

Thanks,

Valerie,

I wrote you a long reply and and in the process of previewing it, I lost it, so contact me at
BCBarrilleaux@aol.com and we can communicate by e-mail. I have lots of data on Joseph's descendants. As far as I know they are all white. I have corresponded with some of John's descendants both white and black. However since I have not been very active with genealogy lately, I have lost contact. Please write me soon and I can give you all the info I have on Joseph and Eliza's descendants.
