Surnames: Tejeda, Tejada, Texada,
Does anyone here know of Tejedas that moved to Texas? My g-g-g-grandparents were Pedro Tejeda and Teresa de Leon (b. 1823). They had a son named Gabriel Tejeda (b. March 19, 1848 in Texas). I just found this Texada room. In Texas, the last name was changed to several versions of the name depending on which priest was writing down information. Thank you.

Jenn

the only Texada i've heard of that went to Texas that early was one of the sons of Manuel Garcia de Texada (Tejada) who was named Joseph Texada (Tejada) I believe. I was told ages ago that he left no legal heirs because his land was turned over to the state when he died. supposedly that is the land where they ended up building Univ. of Texas at Austin. I got this info from Alice Hunter Chilton who did a lot of geneology research in the 1970's.

there may have been other Tejadas that came from Spain separately, but probably via Louisiana first given that it was the hub of Spanish rule at the time. See posting about Manuel Gregorio de Tejada in this message board. He is apparently not the same as Manuel Garcia de Texada of Natchez.

good luck

Jenn,

I noticed a Pedro Tejeda married to a Teresa de Leon in your family. My ancestor Clemente Tejeda(b abt 1793 in Texas) married Maria Josefa de Leon abt 1810 or so.They had Maria Engracia Tejeda and Jose Nombrano Tejeda. When Maria Josefa died Clemente married Maria Ignacia De Leon around 1831. They
had Simon Pedro Tejeda, born june 30, 1832 and Rafael, Francisca and Josefa Tejeda. I don't know if the two Tejedas married to Clemente were related but I suspect they were. They lived around San Antonio, Floresville, Graytown area and some were listed in the 1860 census in wilson County.

My gggrandmother Maria Tejeda (born abt 1810) may have been either Clemente's daughter or his younger sister. Maria also had a brother named Sebastian Tejeda who married Maria Teresa Lopez in 1851.

If you have any information, I would appreciate it. I will share whatever information I have.

Thanks,

Alex Martinez
San Antonio, Texas.

Would love any imfo you got from Alice. Trying to complete my history. Her mother was my grandmoters sister and grew up on Castile Platation on the Bayou.. Most Texada's here are pretty tight lipped as they leave out a lot of imformation not liked.. My mom had started it and I won't to finish it..Thank You
