I have been tracking down a rumor that I have heard from 2 seperate sources. The rumor is that there was a Blackfoot Indian woman somewhere in the Tewell family. Has anyone else heard this? One book I saw also suggested that "Tewell" might be from a Jewish name "Tevel" meaning "Of David." I have no idea if either have any validity. Please let me know if you have heard of either one. Thanks. John Tewell

I was surprised to see your posting. I am just beginning my maternal side genealogy. The family is quite fractured and has been difficult to track. However, I am certain of a few things: My great grandmother, Flonnie (Alice) was full blooded Native American. She married an Irishman with the last name Tewell. I do not know if my great grandfather had changed his last name before or after he married Flonnie. I do know it was originally O'Toole. Flonnie was born Sep. 7, 1899 and died Dec. 1975. I am in the process of getting additional information about her.

I read your message. In tracing my line we have a Saphronia
married to James Tuell who is said to be a Cherokee Indian. Some of
her family refer to her as Fronnie. When I saw Flonnie,It made me wonder
if this was the same person. James Tuell and Fronnie lived in Smyth County
around 1890 where there children married, and at some point, some moved to Washington
Co. VA. I know there was a child from this marriage by the name Alice. But nothing more
is know about her. Could this be the same line? If Fronnie had a child, named Alice, they
might have called her Flonnie? What do you think? Please email me at smmcpherson@netscape.net

Surnames: Tewell;
I descend from this family. EXCEPT: my grandfather and 5-siblings were 1/2 Sioux and not Blackfoot. The children's mother was a daughter of John Tuell, who spelled his surname Tewell to be different from his brother William. John married Julia Ann/Julianne (possibly Larkin). John got so mad at his brother William that he changed his name to John Hunt Morgan. John & Julianne's children after name change were: Lemon Cole Morgan; John M. Morgan; Edward Morgan; Theroin Morgan; Cora Morgan and Hannah E. Morgan.
Hannah was the children's mother.
Hannah aka Francis/Elizabeth/Martha Tuell/Tewell had married a fellow by the name of Gerard BUT he had died prior to her going with the Indian Scouts, who were with the raiding Indians of the wagontrain. Some of these scouts were Sioux and friends with John's brother William and were in John's Cavalry (Children's mother knew the scouts and went with them willingly). Even though they were with other Crow Scouts and John thought they were Crow Scouts.

These scouts took her to Chief Joseph; who later traded her to Sitting Bull for horses. Francis/Martha had her 1st child (my grandfather) when she was 14-yrs old. He was called "William" by members of the Morgan Family. The 6-children were also known as:
1-Fetnah E. Bull; 2-Sarah Elizabeth Bull aka Brown-Shawl-Woman; 3-Hannah R. Bull aka Morningstar; 4-Oliver C. Bull aka John Leamon Tewell (Blackfoot registry); 5-Freeman Bull aka Phillip H. Tewell; 6-Martha Jane/Elizabeth Bull aka Falling Dove.

After the death of children's father Sitting Bull in 1859. The children's 1/2 brother Famous Sitting Bull and Chief Gall took Francis/Martha and her children to Chief Two-Kettle (Blackfoot Sioux) and left them.
After the death of John H. Morgan in 1863/64; his wife Julianne and other children found where their daughter/sister was living. John's other daughter "Cora" went with Gen. Chavington and George A. Custer to get her sister. The children were not wanted. Hannah threw a fit; which frightened her younger siblings and they ran into the woods. She found them all but Morningstar. Gen. Chavington from IN ordered a battalion of men to take Cora, Hannah, and her 5-children to a Ft. North of Dallas, TX; where her mother, brother and his wife were waiting for her return. The fit that Hannah threw ended in Chief Two-Kettle and family members being killed. (at Sands Creek near Ft. Laramie, CO)
After the tribe members were killed; the Indian Scouts were order to search the woods and kill any strays that got away. Morningstar was found by an Indian Scout, by the name of Saulsyur. He took her home to his family, where they raised her and he later married her.
It wasn't too long after their arrival in TX; that Cora moved to a state up north - where the rest of her family was living. Julianne had mentioned she was a widow; while staying at the fort. She married a fellow by the name of Leeds and settled in TX. Francis/Elizabeth/Martha/Hannah placed her 5-children in a Cheyenne Indian Orphanage/Mission in TX (Conditions were not good; when the children were 1/2 Sioux). Hannah waited until her children were settled in, then she moved with her brother and his wife to OH or IN. Where she met and married John Alexander See. They had Mattie See, b: abt 1871. John A. See, d: 1873. Hannah took Mattie to her oldest children and left her for them to raise. She became known as Grace Tuel/Tuell.
Hannah met and married Alford Painter on 4 JULY 1880 in DeKalb Co., Alabama. They moved to Roala, Phelps Co., MO where they settled. She died a widow in 1926. Her family engraved Hannah Elizabeth Morgan See upon her tombstone.
The children, grandchildren and gr grandchildren had stayed pretty close together until their mother's death. Then they split and some went to OH, some to ILL. some went west and others stayed where they were.
Yes, my grandfather & siblings were 1/2 Sioux and not Blackfoot, as people thought; they were only visiting the Blackfoot Tribe.
