It's very interesting about the answers people are giving about the surname Teves. I agree that surname Teves are related to one ancestry because most of them are from San Miguel Azores. I do believe we have kinda French background or Jews related. I would love to know for sure where the name came from.

Hi All,

This is an interesting topic as I am too a Teves on my mother's side. It is true that the Philippines has the largest concentration of Teves especially in the Negros Oriental area. The oldest record of Teves was Don Vicente Anunciacion Teves who came to the Philippines to establish sugar mills/farms in Negros around the 1800s. This started the Teves line in the Philippines. Try the below two sites to see the extensive Family Tree as well as the history of the first Teves in the Philippines.

The question of the very origin is not clear. According to belief agreed by many in the Philippines the first Teves came from mainland China which I could presume to be Macao specifically since according to my Uncle who went to Spain, most Teves are in Southern Spain or Portugal. Since Macao is a Portuguese Colony then the theory would be near correct. They married Spaniards in the Philippines giving rise to mixed Spanish/Portuguese/Chinese descent.

The Te clan aren't originated in the Canton area, but in the Min Nan (Hokkien/Fookien) area (which correspond to the Fujian/Amoy Province and Formosa region). Most Chinese in the Philippines are not Cantonese but Fookien.

I wouldn´t like to dampen your hopes (I mean this in a constructive way) there but the Teves aren´t Spanish but Chinese. They look for Caucasian spouses to breed mestizo heirs, natives to breed integrated offspring or Chinese spouses to breed more Asian offspring - much like the Valderrama and Echauz families of Bacólod & Iloílo and the Ch. Veloso, Aznar and Larrazabal families in Cebú.

But in the brighter side of local history - you can credit the development of the Sugar Industry to Vicente Anunciacion Te(ves) since he first introduced it to some interested foreigners, until his idea caught the attention of the Marqués de Comillas decades later; and Lorenzo Teves who became the only Senator and later on, Member of Parliament hailing from Negros Oriental. :D

And to answer what Te means:

Chinese Character: 鄭 (designates the clan name; note: everyone with this surname are related.)
Meaning: apparently, this is a dialect form of ''Zhèng'' which is the main clan (one of Chinese high nobility) and it has no meaning whatsoever, which makes this one unique clan name.
Other related surnames in local variants: Cheng, Zeng (Mandarin Translation), Te, Ti (Min Nan/Fookien/Hokkien), Tay, Teh (Hakka translation), Thang, (Gan translation), Trinh (Viet-Nam), Tei (Japan), Ching (Philippines), Jeong (Korea)

Hi all,
Just by coincidence I stumbled on this website with our family name. reading through the thread, somewhere someone mentions my roots which are Frisian ( located in the north of the Netherlands, Europe). The ancestry dates back to early 1600 to places like Harlingen and Ackrum.
I was aware that we have especially al lot of family in Hawaii and the Phillipines!
Would be great to establish some connection through the actual family tree.

Anyone ever see a connection to the Dutch?

all my best to evryone
