Hi!
my grandmother's maiden name was Deife, and she settled & lived in Odessa, Wa, married to Wilhelm Quast. We believe her maiden name was actually Teufel, and was changed when she & her family entered the US, early 1900's. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Surnames: Teufel, Deifel, Deife
My husbands grandmother was a Deife. Her fathers grandfather came from Petersthal Russia in 1904 under the name Wilhelm Deifel (though repeatedly I've been told it was Teufel) His father was supposedly a Wilhelm Tuefel. I have been working on finding out when the name changed. It sounds like it changed to Deifel from Teufel before the US. Then between May 1904 and November 1906 the name was changed to Deife. I've been told that happened at either the Lincoln county or Adams county courthouse because thier pastor asked them to change it. Let me know what you have and how far along you've come since you posted this and I'm happy to send you copies of everything I have so far.

In the search for the roots of my ancestor Leonhard/Johann Leonhard Teufel who settled in the Banat region of Austria-Hungary, I have run across a great deal of information on Teufels from Peterstal Russia. If you google "Teufel Peterstal Russia," you will find many leads.

Happy Hunting!
