Tesch comes from German word "Tasche" which means pocket.
Originally it came from "Taschenmacher" = pocket "maker"

This is an older thread, but I'll still weigh in. I'm related to Carl T's first born, Frederick. It goes

Carl T Tesch
Frederick Tesch
Henry Tesch
Clarence Tesch
Gary Tesch
- ME -

So, Carl is my great-great-great-grandfather. I have a picture of his gravestone, that's all. I have photos of the rest of them. The family originated in "Pomerania". Whether you call it Wartenstein, Germany (past) or Pyrzyce, Poland (current), it's still "Pommern". It's now in northwest Poland, up by the Baltic Sea. I guess the closest big city would be Gdansk.

Have you found Carl Tesch and his family on a passenger list yet? That's where a lot of us are stumped. I would be interested in sharing info and photos with you and learning more about Frederick's service in the Civil War. Another sibling was found since the last posting. Her name was Wilhelmine, born 23 Sep 1837, making her the first born of Carl and Charlotte Tesch. She married Frederick or Friedrick Neumann. Info on her would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I'm sorry. I was SO massively into this for 5-6 months, but I haven't been checking recently. E-mail me at kjtesch@sbcglobal.net for that Tesch branch. I'm dubious about "Wilhelmine". There are a lot of Wilhelmine's entering the tree in those early years. I'll check the notes from my grandfather. He knew Frederick very well. He wrote me a long letter explaining his family. I can find it. The story about the "Tesch boys" fighting in the Civil War (from Wisconsin) has been told a million times.

I would LOVE to communicate with you! My mother is Shirley Tesch, daughter to William Tesch, who was the first born of Ferdinand and Mary Tesch. Is Alvina still living in Idaho? I believe Vera Hanson and Alvina Umland are the last living children of Ferdinand and Mary. If they are still in good health, my sisters and I would love to talk to them. Please contact me at dklanthier@charter.net. Thanks!
