My grandfather came from Spain, I believe he originally spelled it Terran.

My grandfather was Julian Teran, who came from San Luis Potosi. He and his young bride (Petra Meza) left Mexico during the conflict in the early 1900's. He lost track of his brothers once he left because his parents died within a month of each other. We heard that there were Terans in Nicaragua, El Paso, California, and Corpus Christi, Texas. Julian lived in Austin all his life until he died about 7 years ago.

Also, the family trademark is the "Roman" nose. It seems to be a trait that all the males and some of the females inherited!
One of our cousins in Puebla (Juan Ponce DeLeon, deceased)
said that his study of the Teran name shows that at one time it was spelled with an H (Tehran). No proof. The family does look mid-eastern.

My grandfather Pedro Terán was born in Cantabria, north of Spain. He lived in Hoyos de Valdeolea. There is also in Cantabria a small village Terán. I have traced heraldics for Terán.

My grandpa´s name was also Pedro Terán and he lived in Hoyos (a small litle village in Spain). We share the same ancestors!, and I bet you have a very ROMAN nose!. As a matter of fact I KNOW you have a roman nose, because... I'm your sister. A big hug from Nieves

The surname Teran is most likely derived from the Latin word for land or earth, Terra. Because of this there are various Terans that are not necessarily related and can be found in England, Germany, Spain and Italy with many spelling variations. In Spanish, however, Teran is also a place name for a small town located in Cantabria where it is assumed that the Terans originate. In the Americas there are three places where the surname is said to be fairly common. These are Monterrey Mexico, Quito Ecuador, and Cochabamba Bolivia. My paternal grandfather was from Cochabamba.
