I am looking for information on a John Frederick Telcher. He was born about 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. He fought in WWI and made the navy is career. He married a lady named Margaret.

I don't know when or where Mr. Telcher died. His wife and their daughter Lois moved to California, where Margaret remarried a man with the last name of Tate.

If anyone knows anything about Mr. Telcher or the Telcher Family, please contact me at GenFindem@aol.com. Thanks! Teri

My grandfather was Max (Maximillian) Telcher (possibly TELSTCHER). He was born in Munich, Germany, circa 1893.He lived and died in Melbourne, Australia, in 1968. Nothing is known of him prior to his arrival in Australia. He married Catherine Victoria Thomas (1891-1974) and had four children, Kathleen,Gwen, Connie and my father Maximillian (Max) Telcher. My mother recalls seeing my father's birth certificate and his surname on that was possibly TELSTCHER. It is believed the family changed the name at the onset of the second world war because of anti-German sentiments. My aunty, Gwen, adopted the surname TELFER. Both my grandfather and my father served in the Australian army during World War 2. My father passed away in Sydney, Australia, in 1999.
If you believe there might be some connection between our families please contact me. I will provide whatever additional information I can and would appreciate same.
Regards - Peter Telcher

To Jim Telscher - It might be that my surname was derived from the name Telscher. The change in spelling would probably have been made prior to my father Max Telcher's birth in Melbourne in 1914. At that time his parents surname was Telcher but there is no records prior to that time of when or how his father, also Max Telcher, arrived in Australia. I seem to have hit a brick wall at that point.

Jim - My correct address is peter.telcher@bigpond.com.au. I do not know Telscher the tennis player. My parents were both born in Australia. My mother is Dulcie May Telcher (nee Davis) born Penrith, Australia, 11/11/1924. My father was Maxwell Joseph Telcher, born East Melbourne, Australia, 4/8/1914, died Fairfield Hospital, New South Wales, Australia, 1999. He had three sisters, Constance "Connie", Kathleen and Gwen. Gwen was known by the surname "Telfer" for some reason. Their parents, my grandparents on father's side, were Maxmillian Telcher, born c.1893 in Munich, Germany, died 18/11/1968 in Northcote, Victoria, Australia, and Catherine Victoria Thomas, born Australia, 1891 - 1974. We have found no record of exactly when or where Maxmillian was born or when or how he came to Australia. He seems to have had no relatives in Australia. He obviously arrived sometime before 1914 and it is only oral history that records his name was Telscher or Teltscher (or something similar). It is likely that he changed his name on arrival in Australia in an attempt to Anglocise it as a result of the anti-German feeling at the time. In July 1940 he joined the Australian army. He was probably too old so gave his date of birth as 1900 - obviously not correct as his son was born in 1914! He saw service in Egypt and Greece before being discharged in November 1942. Sorry I have no more information but anything you can add will be appreciated. Best regards - Peter Telcher.
