Our family lore presumed my great-grandfather, Earnst Teichert, was from the Leipzig area of Germany, but perhaps they confused the name with Liebstad. Earnst supposedly came to the US because he was not interested in being a conscript in the German army. He settled before the turn of the century in Chicago where he met my great-grandmother, Johanna Nachadil. They bought a farm in Greensburg, Pa, where he worked in the coal mines until his death from black lung disease in the 1930s. They had seven children and the family was very involved in the Socialist Labor Party movement of the late 1930s and 1940s. One of his sons, Edward A Teichert, Sr.,ran for President of the US against FDR on the Socialist Labor Party ticket.Perhaps this will help you in your search. I can find no info on my great-grandmother Johanna and have yet to link my great-grandfather Earnst to his father or siblings.

Oh, and as to serendipity, I married a German-American, Catherine (Cassy) Grieb. And my firstborn, Nicholas, is studying Physics and Computer Science at Lafayette College, not far from the Pennsy coal mine area.
