missing ancestors

I've been looking for the ancestors of my grandmother.
Her maiden name was Taker, born in Grosse Isle, Quebec, Canada.
She has always believed that her grandfather was a sailmaker from Finland, but Taker does not seem to be a Finnish name. Thinking it over, she thought that he may have then come from an area of Russia somewhere along Finlands border, but her brother says he came from England.
While doing my research into her parents grandparents I came across the spelling Teichert .. hmmmm sounds the same to me if the last t is silent. And i can find Teichert in both England Russia.
Has anyone missplaced a decendent? .. I may have him ..... and a whole bunch of other decendants from him..
He was named Peter Taker (Teichert) , he was married twice (that i know of) first to ? Keaton (Keating) then to (I believe) Katherine MacLean.

If anyone can verify this or add any facts , I'd appreciate any all help with the family line.

Thanks for your time,
Rose

Rose,

I know this message is very old, but just ran across it this evening in a link from the Taker family board. Peter was indeed married to a Keating and then to Catherine MacLean. According to the 1881 census of Canada, he gave his birthplace as Russia, and nationality as Russian, so you may be on to something. The earliest form of Taker surname I have seen in my research is TAGER (pronounced Tay-Gher... hard g)... the name went on to become Taker as it is spelled to this day. Your ancestor may have gone from the border of Finland/Russia to England, and then set sail for Canada, so anything is possible. I would also tend to lean toward the Finnish ancestry as many Russian surnames use the "ovich" and "ovna" endings meaning son of/daughter of in their surnames. One can't do that with Peter's surname. There could also be the name Teckoff/Tekov. I too have been toying around with possibilities as you can see. If I do stumble upon anything, will gladly let you know.
