Hans Christian Tegen

I have a Hans Christian Tegen b. 1853 in Germany and who sailed from Hamburg to America around 1883 with Johann Tegen (a brother?). He married Ida Ohlen and had three children in Hamburg before the family moved to America. Once in the US, he seems to have gone by the name Christ H. Tegen.

I'm hoping to find more information on his parents P. Tegen (a glass worker, supposedly) and Mary Finner, or any other family. Any information would be much appreciated.

I am in the process of buying a home in Two Rivers, Wisconsin that he designed. He also designed the Courthouse in Manitowoc County Wisconsin. I would be interested in any information or photos you may have about him.
Thank
Mark

That's pretty neat! My husband and I have been watching a listing for Two Rivers that mentioned him as the architect. He's my great-grandfather. The listing we saw was a very nice house, so I hope you guys enjoy it! We're actually moving to Manitowoc this weekend (after me living away from home for 15 years!) and I'd be happy to share any info or pictures that we have with you. My family is so proud of the work he did in town and around the area. Feel free to email me at vadneydewane@yahoo.com.

Take care!
Dianne

I found this on the website http://www.2manitowoc.com/biosT.html :

CHRIST H. TEGEN

This is a bio. sketch from "History of Manitowoc County Wisconsin",
by Dr. L. Falge, 1911-1912, v.2, p.488-492.

Christ H. Tegen, architect and superintendent of Manitowoc, who has
designed many of the largest and most beautiful buildings in the city, is
a native of Germany, and was born in 1856, a son of P. and Mary (Finner)
Tegen, who spent their lives in the old country, where Mr. Tegen was
engaged in the glass business.
Christ H. Tegen received a college education in his native country,
attending the polytechnic school at Hamburg, Germany, and the Holtzmann
Polytechnic Institute, and in 1883 came to the United States, settling in
Manitowoc for two years and then going to Milwaukee for six years, after
which he returned to Manitowoc, where he has since followed his profession.
Among the buildings designed by Mr. Tegen may be mentioned the insane
asylum, the Holy Family Hospital, the Manitowoc Court House, the
Rhinelander Court House and the Luling schoolhouse the Williams and
Dempsey blocks and many other business structures, and numerous residences.
In 1878 he was married to Miss Ida Ohlen, who was born in Hamburg, Germany,
and they have three children: Robert F., one of the leading architects of
Portland, Oregon, and a graduate of the University of Illinois at
Champaign; Paula, who serves as stenographer and assistant to her father
and Martha, who married J. J. Healy, district attorney of Manitowoc county.
Mr. Tegen is a prominent member of the Elks.

Hope this helps!

That is Christ H. Tegen of Manitowoc. He died in 1917. In terms of parent, you know as much as anyone else. He did have 3 children. Robert F. Tegen, Paula Tegen (born Jan 1881, Germany) and Martha Tegen (born Jun 1882, Germany). Martha married J.J. Healy and had a daughter.

Any more information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings jrtegen!

It's been about 8 years since my original post and I've come a long way in my research since then. I still have a brick wall with the parents of Christ H. Tegen, but have lots about him and his descendants to offer. If there is any chance that we share Tegen relatives I would so love to connect. Please email me at vadneydewane@yahoo.com and I would be happy to share an online family tree with pictures and info etc and other family stuff.

Daughter Martha Tegen did marry John J. Healy and they had about 6 children in Manitowoc. Paula never married and had no descendants. Robert married a couple times, though I am not positive about whether he ever had any descendants.

There is another branch of Tegens locally that I would love to figure out a connection to, seeing as how there were two Tegens listed together during Christ H. Tegen's passage from Hamburg. Again, it would be lovely to figure out how and if we are connected.

Thank you so much for responding!
