There was a Tejan killed during the mining strike in Houghton count michigan in 1913.
Colorado Spring Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colorado) > 1914 > February > 16 Strike "Gunmen Are Convicted" Are found Guilty of Manslaughter Houghton , Mich. Feb 15 Three Waddell-Mahon decetive agency guards and a deputy sheriff today were found guilty of manslaughter for the killing of Steve Putrich, a striking copper mine worker, at Seeberville on August 14, last year. Harry James, the other deputy sheriff, was acquitted under instuctions from the court. The men convicted were , James Cooper, Arthur Davis, William Groff and Edwin Polkinghorne, all but Polkinghorne are from New York. Clemency was recommended to the court in the case of Polkinghorne , the deputy sheriff. Judge Flannigan will pass sentence on the convicted men tomorrow. It has not been decided weather an appeal will be taken. The jury took the case at 6 o'colck last night and reached a verdict at 10;30 this morning after 10 ballots. The court had instructed the jurors that they could find the men guilyy of either second degree murder or manslaughter. When the verdict was announced, Charles Watson, attorney for the men, demanded a poll of the jury and each of the 12 men said that it was his verdict. The four convicted men, who have been at liberty under$5,000 bonds, were turned over to the custody of the sheriff. James was released but was ordered to report tomorrow in connection with the killing of Aloise Tejan, with which crime, the five men also are charged. It is regarded as doubtful weather the men will ever be tried for this offense. Thomas Raleigh, another Waddell-Mahon guard who also was involved in the Seeberville shooting, disappeared on the eve of the trail and has not been caught. The case attracted widespread interest throughout the copper country, owning to it's connection with the strike. The Waddell-Mahon men were brought here at the beginning of the strike to help protect property of the mining companies and nonunion men employed to fill the striker's places. The strikers have referred to them as "gunmen. " The nearest that I can make out in a census in 1910 are these two Record Joseph Tizon Adams, Houghton, MI abt 1876 Austria Boarder View Record Martin Tizon Adams, Houghton, MI abt 1880 Austria They did'tn spell names very well back then. alicia

The three who came were herman born in 1829 age 31, gesine, his sister born 14 june 1841, age 20 and the younger brother heinrich, born 15 january 1845. Herman tietjen married katherine ahrens in germany 22 july 1858. while conformation lacks of this conclusion, katherine and her three brothers probably came here with the tietjens, since the three brothers enlisted in the union army in 1862. john henry ahrens was shot at gettysburg. Soon after his return from the army gesine tietjen married her brother in law john ahrens. The herman tietjens and the john henry ahrens moved to homestead iowa. in 1863 heinrich tietjen went back to germany to visit his family and friends and returned to west alexandria that same year. after his return he was emplyed at the stottler and glander grist mill. Located on cumberland road east of west alexandria. Dieterich glander the partener of e.p. stottler in the mill had married sena hager in germany on 9 october 1847, before emigrating to america. They had 10 children all born in u.s. The oldest was their daughter rebbeca, born 16 july 1848 in lanier twp. preple county, ohio. There were 14 children born to heinrich and rebbeca; deterich, elma, frank, twins laura and mary, george, twins edward and fredrik, thruman, imokate, walter, edna(my ancestor), and martha.
when the first children started to school mr.s.moore surface said that tietjen was to difficult for the small children and changed the spelling to Tejan which was adopted by the family and the spelling tietjen disapeared. According to a letter written in 1920 to the eaton register herald by their son, the rev. george b tejan; the henry tejans bought and operated the louis goldsmith farm, north of city limits of eaton, from there they moved to the donohoe farm, later they lived on the hunt place a 200 acre farm owned by mrs.
