hwheeler2@juno.com My mother was a descendant of Obadiah Tefft, her ancestors at one time had a family bible with the record in it "Obediah Tefft Captain of Ship Rebeca died at Batavia". I take responsibility for assuming this was in New York. He had just become Captain and on his first trip became tied up in the embargo in Indonesia, the capital was Batavia at the time. He and several of the crew I believe became sick and died. Here is the few items I have come across.

On rootsweb there was a listing of the children of Obediah Tefft
1. Sarah married Cowen
2. Betsey married 14 Feb 1822 Israel ?
3. Carolina married 11 Feb 1824 William Andrews of and at Providence
4. Mary Ann (From LDS, RI Deaths, married Edward Luther, Mary 1803 - 1879)
5. William d. 10 dec 1822 mate of the brig Ann, son of Capt Obed of this town, in 23rd years at sea, on board brig Ann on passage from Havana to this port
