Teddlie surname

Just returned from a trip to Ireland, both the Republic of and Northern Ireland. Teddlie is not an Irish name, whether it is spelled Teddlie, Tedley or Tedlie. There are records of Tedlies and Tedleys in Northern Ireland which means that most likely they are of Scottish or British origin. While our ancestor is reported to have sailed from Cork in the Republic of Ireland, so did over a million other people during the mirgration periods. I was unable to find a record of William James Tedley's emigration from Cork in the Migration database at the Ulster American Park.

Did you look under O'Teddlie?

I did. O'Teddlie or O'Tedlie doesn't exist in Ireland. To be sure before replying, however, I checked the following databases on Ancestry: Ireland Civil Registration Deaths Index, Irish Flax Growers List, 1796 and Irish Records Extraction Database. There a quite a few Tedlies in each of these but not one O'Teddlie. I too have the family legend but believe it was a tale told my our Irish sailor ancestor to entertain his children.

just wondering what your connection is to the Teddlie family. My gggrandmother was a Teddlie, a daughter of "the old sailor". She married a Shumake then moved to Winn parish, LA.

I have legally assumed my maiden name of Teddlie. I am descended from Willis, the eldest child, through Theodore to Tillit, my grandfather. My father was Tillit's only son, W.I. "Pete" Teddlie. We also have a descendants of William James Teddlie page on Facebook. It isn't very active but you might want to take a look.

My mother was a Teddlie from Winn Parish Louisiana. We grew up with the "old sailor" story as well.

Glad to hear from a cousin. Do you have a picture of Aunt Ella? I have photos of most of the children of Theodore and Ann Teddlie but do not have one of Aunt Ella. I did post a photo on my tree of three of Aunt Ella's children. If you have a photo of Ella Teddlie Bishop could you please post it or e-mail it to me at patted77@yahoo.com Thanks and keep in touch.
