Daniel Tebbs lived in Virginia in 1683 where he was a servant to Isaac Allerton. He was supposedly the son of Daniel and Mary Tebbs and married the daughter of James Foushee. Does anyone know where he came from?

I don`t know if this will be any help, but my maiden name is Tebbs and most of them as far as I know came from the Boston Lincolnshire or Peterborough cambridgeshire regions of the UK. I`d love to contact other Tebbs and find out if we`re related, it`s an unusual name but there seems to be far more of you in the US than over here!!!

Hi Michelle - Most of the people with the Tebbs surname in the United States descend from Daniel Tebbs and Charlotte Foushee of Virginia. Daniel was in Virginia as early as 1687. He probably came from England, although that is not a known fact. There is also a group of Tebbs families in Pennsylvania that descend from another Tebbs, who came to Philadelphia, Pa. much later than Daniel Tebbs came to Virginia.

Hi John. Interesting to know that most of you seem to descend from just a couple of families! As my grandfather`s family are mainly based in Boston, (Lincolnshire not Massachusetts) it`s a fair possibility Daniel did come from England. You might be interested to know that the Mayor of Boston last year was one Albert Tebbs, but I`m not sure if he`s a relative or not. I`d love to hear any more information you have on Daniel and Charlotte. Many thanks for replying.

Hi Michelle,
The information about Daniel Tebbs early years in the U.S. is scant. He answered an interagatory in 1713 stating that he came to this country 26 years ago (1687), and he also refers to Isaac Allerton as "his master." It is possible he arrived as an indentured servant. Daniel Charlotte had 8 known children (Hannah, Margaret, Daniel, James, William, George, Foushee and Charlotte). Margaret, Daniel, James, William and Foushee have known heirs. By the mid-1700's the Tebbs family was one of wealth and position in Colonial Virginia. In succeeding generatiions the family has spread all over the United States. You may find it interesting that here in the states we have a Tebbs, Kentucky, a Tebbs Bend, Kentucky, a Tebbsdale, Utah and a Tebbston, Maryland, all named for members of the same family. I have also heard an old family tradition that the Tebbs came from a place called St. Abbe or St. Ebbe in England, although I have no substantiation for the story. With best wishes,

Hi Jen,

I do have information on the family of Mary Tebbs Taylor. I have data on the families of several of her children. It appears you are interested in the Overcash and Elam lines - I have some information there. I would be glad to share information with you. If you send me a little more specifically what you are interested in, it would help greatly.

Thanks,
