Captian W.F. Tebbetts of Mobile, Alabama
From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper
Thurs., May 26, 1904
"About 2 o'clock this morning as Captain W. F. Tebbetts, collector of the port, was just about to enter his home at the northeast corner of Conception and St. Anthony street an unknown man stepped out from behind a large tree on the edge of the sidewalk at that point and made a lunge at him with a long knife. Captain Tebbetts says he saw the gleam of the knife and sidestepped. When the man realized that his blow had missed he ran rapidly to State street and turned east on that street. He was a man of medium stature, slight build and wore a straw hat. Captain Tebbetts notified the police, who responded very promptly."

Re: Captian W.F. Tebbetts of Mobile, Alabama
from the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper, May 27, 1904
On arriving at his office yesterday morning Chief Case learned of the reported attack upon Captain W.F. Tebbetts. ... The detectives were put on the case. It was learned that John Lynch, a barber, was returning home at that hour, and the chief immediately had him summoned." Lynch said he was going home to the southeast corner of State and Conception street at about 2:10 a.m. when he encountered a man who threw up his hands as the two passed. As the man entered a house, Lynch recognized him as Captain Tebbetts. When a reporter questioned Tebbetts later, Tebbetts praised the police for working quickly, and "said the statement to Chief Case by Lynch was just about as the matter occurred. 'I was very much worked up when I saw the man coming out of the darkness and as to the knife, I saw an uplifted arm and may have thought I saw the weapon.'"

"Mr. John Lynch, who unintentionally frightened Mr. Tebbetts while on his way home Thursday morning, requests The Register to state that the matter was never traced to him by Chief of Police Case, but that he went voluntarily to the chief, and told the facts in the case."
