Hoping someone can help identify. My ancestor is Meliva Teachout, age 46 in the 1850 census of Malta, NY, married to Joel Gould (1803-1886). They had four children, Delia C. Gould Wright (1828), Jane Gould Post Thompson (1831-1918), Mary T. Gould (1837-1911), and Roscius K. Gould (1842-1877). Joel and Meliva are found in Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., in the 1830 census, then in Malta in 1840-1850.

Meliva died on Sept 5, 1852, and is buried in Jonesville Cemetery. The only other Teachouts that I can find buried in Jonesville are Jane Teachout Filkins (1811-1843), daughter of John C. Teachout and Hannah Sarah Swartout; and Mrs. Sarah Teachout (1801-1844), wife of Cornelius.

In the 1810 census of Halfmoon, Saratoga Co. (from which Clifton Park was formed in 1828), there are six Teachout families: Abram, John, Nicholas, Samuel, Jacob, and John. All but Nicholas have daughters under the age of 10, the right age for Meliva.

In the 1820 census of Halfmoon, there are Nicholas, James, Jacob, Henry, and Samuel Teachout, as well as an Isaac in Malta and another Isaac in Moreau. All of these have either a female age 10-16 or a female age 16-26 (Meliva would have been about 16, according to the 1850 census).

In the 1830 census for Clifton Park, there is a Nicholas Teachout (age 30-40) enumerated on the page immediately prior to Joel and Meliva Teachout Gould.

The Jonesville cemetery and the 1850 census both read as "Meliva," and her daughter Jane's marriage record says "Melia." I have not found any other records with this first name in Saratoga County or surrounding area, much less any Teachouts with a similar name.

Please help if you recognize any of this information!

Jim. This is the first time I have heard of Melira Teachout Gould, but I have worked with the
Clifton Park genealogies for a few years, so I will keep digging into my data files for you. The
Teachouts seem to be are an elusive group, however I will start my own research into this family. It looks as if you have done quite a bit of work already. Looks good up to this point. Which most probably is as good as we are going to get. Keep trying & Keep in touch.

Quick addendum: I have just seen an image of her gravestone at FindaGrave.com, and it clearly says "Melira Gould," not Meliva. I had taken the name "Meliva" from an online transcription of the Jonesville Cemetery, which was in error. Subsequently, I misread the name in the 1850 census. The photograph of her tombstone clearly spells, in capital letters, "MELIRA GOULD," and the 1850 census shows this as well.

Pat, thanks for posting. As I look into this family, I keep coming upon the family of Abram Teachout (b.1763) (son of Nicholas Teachout and Elizabeth Travis) and his wife Ruth Tubbs. They were in the right place at the right time, and Abram's apparently much-younger brother Nicholas Teachout (b.c.1794) was living in Clifton Park in 1830, on the census page immediately before Melira and her husband Joel Gould. I see many online trees that give Abram and Ruth only 5 sons and no other children, but is it possible that they had more? I find an "Abm. Teachout," age 26-44, living in Halfmoon in the 1810 census, with two females under age 10; is this the same Abram (who should be about 47)?

I agree, let's keep in touch.

I found Melira's headstone photo, too. I have something ticking in the back of my mind about a "Mary Melius" that I want to check it out, because I know that the women I have in mind with that name was NOT the woman, Melira Teachout Gould. I also have a listing of the known children of Abram and Ruth. If you would like, I could snail mail it to you so you can see what
I have been able to dig up. I'll keep looking. Thus far, I can only find descendants, not ancestors,
and I find that frustrating. My family line stops at about the same time, the War of the Revolution.
very few records for that era. pat

Yes, I'm finding the Revolutionary era is a barrier in several of my lines as well. There are few promising avenues though, with land transaction records, state/colony censuses, church records, and a few wills. I haven't found many definitive breakthroughs in these lines yet, but certainly some good documents that give corroborating evidence. Melira's husband, Joel Gould, was one of these: I probably won't ever have 100% proof of his parentage, but nearly every piece of documentary evidence I have scraped together points in the same direction.
Anyway, if you have the time and inclination, I'd love to see what you have about Abram and Ruth's family, and/or Abram's brothers. I'd be willing to help you with your research too, if I can. Here's my email address so we can talk more directly, and I can give you my home address if you want it:
