Edward Teach, also known as Blue Beard the Pirate, had for some time lived with his outlaw band on an island off Accomack. From this place he made frequent inroads on her majestys shipping, hiding his treasures at the foot of an enormouse sand hill, which afterwards shifted its position, moving to bring it between the government lighthouse and the sea. Surface to say that when Teach sought his treasure it was not to be found. In 1718 Teach captured a ship, but a survivor managed to communicate this fact and the pirates whereabouts to an English Man of War. The commander at once dispatched a sloop under command of Lieutenant Mainard to capture him. Teach was caught and the sloop returned with the pirates head dangling from the masthead.
