I am researching this family. My ancestor is Gershom Remington Tayer, who I believe is son of Benjamin and grandson of Benjamin of Newport, RI. He is related to Gershom Remington of Newport and the Franklin family of Newport. I'm not up-to-date about information on the internet but have encountered some rumors.

I am also interested in this family. My ggg grandmother is Orcelia Tayer (married to Samuel Bragg). She was born June 12, 1830 in New York. Married Samuel Bragg on Jan. 7, 1844 in Dover, Lenawee County, Michigan. Died Dec. 26, 1897 in Gratiot County, Michigan. She is buried in Pritchard Cemetery.

I believe she is the daughter of Jason Tayer and Mary King. There were two Tayers in Lenawee County in 1840. Jason and Gershom Remington Tayer. They were both from Monroe County, NY, and both reported to be the sons of Benjamin Tayer of Stephentown, NY. Land records show that they came to Michigan in 1835.

I have recently found the will and probate records for Gershom Remington Tayer who died August 5, 1853 in Madison, Lenawee County, Michigan. There is no mention of Orcelia whatsoever in his will or probate records. Since she was still alive at the time, I can probably rule him out as her father. That leaves Jason Tayer. I would love to find something that proved it for sure.

I am researching the other known children of Jason Tayer. A marriage record for Franklin Tayer and a death record for John W. Tayer shows parents as Jason Tayer and Mary King. On the 1850 Census, she was listed as Polly.

Jason Tayer has been extremely hard to track down. The last item that I have for him, is that in 1855 he was Commissioner of Highways for Somerset, Hillsdale County, MI. An obituary for Oscar Tayer (a known son) says that he moved to Fayette Ohio as a child. But I have not been able to find Jason in either Michigan or Ohio. And I have found no connection between him and Orcelia. Other than the fact that there were only two Tayers in that area in 1840 and probate records seem to prove that Gershom Remington Tayer is not her father.

I would love to have more information on this family.
