Have been researching for 25 years and know a bit about them! Do you have information connecting the English and American Tawneys? Emigration records etc? Please let me know. Thanks, Tony.

Hi, Has the English Tawney's name changed through the years? I decended from Johann Jacob Tanny who came over on the Loyal Judith in 1739 from Germany... We are now Tawney, however on the ship list it is Tanny and his brother was Johan Adam Tanny.

If I recall correctly, Roger Brooke Taney who was chief justice of supreme court decended from England. I will check that. You can also. I believe that it is in the Catholic encylopedia on line. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Hello Pam,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, there were a variety of spellings of TAWNEY in England over the centuries. I am aware that many U S Tawneys descend from German emigrants. I have a biography of Roger Brooke Taney who, it would seem, descended from English stock but I have not found any documentary proof.
Best wishes, Tony.

Have you searched this site for Roger Brooke Taney. When I searched it came up with his gg-grandfather coming from England in 1660. He was a Michael Taney b ca 1632 in England. Died 5/22/1692 in Maryland. Hope this helps to find a connection.
