Hi, Just read your message. Iwonder if you have made any progress ??
My grandmother was a Taw, father Henry born in Sheerness in Kent UK. 1840s not in your time-frame I reckon !
But Taw is so rare (like hens' teeth ) I wonder if somewhere along the line there is a connection.
Am very interested,
Catch you later, perhaps. Regards Joyce .....England

My TAWs come from Portsmouth but they were also in Kent in the early 1800s. I wonder if their might be a connection with our TAWs.

Hello ,Carole , Saw your reply when you posted it but couldn't manage to read content....dont know why !!!
Anyway , have read it now...
My earliest sighting of the Taws in Kent is in 1830 ish ..I have a will of Robert Taw who died in 1837 ..aged 90...he was a superannuated gunner in the Royal Navy...had a son called Jeremiah named in will along with 2 more...cant remember names at the moment..
Jeremiah was my 3xgt/grandfather.. I feel fairly sure that the Taws may have had connections with Portsmouth , maybe in the late 1700s..Taw does not seem to be a Kentish name .I also have seen the surname in Cornwall...
Which Taws in Kent are you connected to ?? I have a feeling that the Kent Taws originated from Robert ..
regards ,

Hi Joyce
I have a Jeremiah TAW baptised 6th February 1823 in St Thomas Portsmouth. His father was Robert TAW and his mother a Mary. I think she might be the widowed Mary COX who married a Robert TAW in Rochester St Margarets in 1815. I also have the will of Robert TAW which was proved 1837ish. How did you find out this Robert was 90? Do you have his death certificate? I believe my Jeremiah's father Robert was baptised in 1784 in Portsmouth to Robert TAW and Elizabeth HUXTABLE. It is possible that he is the Robert TAW mentioned in the will of 90 year old Jeremiah. There are so few TAWs around and certainly few Jeremiahs that I would have thought there is almost certainly a connection between the Kent and Portsmouth groups.
All the best

Hello , Carol , Is it possible that you and I have the same will ..Robert Taw in Gillingham , 183o ish ....he died in 1837 aged 90...Jeremiah was one of the beneficiaries along with a couple of brothers..the wife was called Mary ( she was executrix and witnesses were a couple called Stones..Mary Taw is on the 41 census living with this couple..
I have a copy of the parish entry for Robert Taw's burial 1837 aged 90 in Gillingham ..4th Feb ..
My Jeremiah was married to a Naomi Cameron ..I have their marriage somewhere !!! their son William was born 1814..I do have a list of their other children's baptisms...g/children of Robert Taw the gunner ...
I dont think I have a record of jeremiah's birth ..have no proof that it was in Kent..
I have a couple of images which you can have ..I know that Jeremiah and Naomi had a son called Robert ..
I wonder if your Mary Cox married the Robert who was mentioned in his father's will ??
Can you make sense of the above ???
Joyce...
ps ..Will need your email for the images...

Hello again Joyce
If you want to contact me directly my email is:
caroljanefranks AT hotmail.com (I've written it this way so that you will be able to interpret it but so that the web robots won't). I suffered terribly with spam with my previous isp.
Since my last post I looked at Gillingham burials on cityark and found the burial for Robert in 1837. He was 90 I see, just as you said. I looks as if he was living in Maidstone at the time of his death. The abode is written as 2 separate words. I do believe I had found this burial before and had it on my old pc before it crashed. I also found your Jeremiah's burial at Chatham st Marys in 1839 I think and found Robert's wife Mary in the 1841 census. Mary, widow of Robertseems to be 20 or so years younger so I wonder if she was a second wife.
There are not too many TAWs about in the UK at all which makes me more sure of the connection.
My TAWS were all mariners and watermen. Their descendants ended up in Chatham, which is where I was born. Very many of my ancestors are connected with the dockyards and naval bases on both side of the family.
I can't help thinking that your Jeremiah who married Naomi CAMPBELL - in Rochester if I recall - and my Robert who married Elizabeth HUXTABLE in Portsmouth might well have been brothers. What a pity your Jeremiah died prior to 1841. It would have been nice to find out what county he was born in.
All the best

Hi I have both Huxtable & Taw in my tree, Huxtable from Devon and Taw of Portsea, hamp?

Hi Ken
My TAWS are from Portsea. Way back in the tree they were known by the surname of TAW, HUXTABLE or HUXTABLE TAW. I suspect some of the children took the name of their father and some of their mother as the eldest children appear to have been born before their parents married. No doubt if I could trace the HUXTABLEs back further their roots would be in Devon, where most of the HUXTABLEs are found.
If you have TAW in Portsea we almost certainly have a connection.
Best wishes
