I come from the Tapanila family. I don't know if it is same one. My Tapanila family settled in Canada. They went to Saskatchewan. Battle Creek, Saskatchewan. Some of them died in the Great Flu Pan-epidemic of 1918. My great grandmother returned to Canada to care for them as they died.
Two Tapanila sisters married two Swedish brothers. They were Communist. They made a grave mistake. They believed the Russians in the US and Canada recruiting the Finns to come to "Paradise" and go to Russia. Everything was taken from them but the clothes on their backs. They were placed under house arrest. Ransom was paid by the family in the US and in Canada three times. The Russians would not let them go. One family member was shot and killed at the border of Finland as he tried to escape to Finland. Some were sent to the gulags in Siberia. All were sent to labor camps and made to work as slaves. Even the children. One girl child died in Russia.
One female escaped over the border to Finland and went to England. She made a new life in England and never returned to Canada. Her son was alone in Russia. His father was dead. His sister was dead. His mother was in London. He began to steal food to survive. He was arrested at age 9 and sent to a men's prison in the Ukraine. He escaped from the prison. He was captured and sent to a new prison on Vladivostok. At age 14 at British Consulate General Officer found him in the prison in Vladivostok and took him out. He had been in Russia since age 3. It was now 1945. Rudy only spoke Russian and Finnish.
The consulate officer took Rudy to Yokohama, Japan. He sent word to the Canadian ambassador in Tokyo. The ambassador sent word come to Tokyo. Rudy and the Brit Consulate Officer moved to Tokyo and stayed 2 weeks at the Embassy with the ambassador and his family. Rudy had no papers and had not lived in Canada since he was 3. He had no parents to vouch for him so they had to locate relatives to care for him and figure out who he was. He did not speak English so this was an added problem.
Arrangements were made to have an uncle take Rudy. The Brit brought Rudy to Vancouver, Canada and handed him over to the Canadian Jewish Refugee Committee. They booked his train passage, gave him a letter telling the train conductor he did not speak English and was returning from the war, was a refugee, etc. A letter saying what he wanted to eat and drink since he did not speak English and money to pay for his meals. They made arrangements for his uncle to meet the train. Everything was arranged.
Rudy came home. He grew up. He married. He had children, grandchild and had a very nice life after his time in a gulag.
Rudy's mother met a nice Englishman. Married him and lived the rest of her days in Blackpool, England.
The last name of the Swedes who married into the Tapanila family was Simonson.
Fred Simonson died at the Russia-Finland border in 1935 or 1936.
Sylvia Tapanila Simonson was arrested on trumped up charges of being an American spy and arsonist in 1937 in Kohtupohja Karjala. A pulp mill caught fire and she was blamed. 1938 she was released. She ran across the border and went to England. She was in Blackpool, England working in a hotel when she met a very nice Englishman named Athur Swainston. sylvia died in 1989. Arthur died in 1990.
Lilian Simonson (Rudy's sister) died in in Kontupohja, Russia (spelling?) around 1935. She was born in 1924 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Rudy was ultimately sent to Dunblane to live with his uncle. Rudolf Simsonson (Rudy) was born Nov 20, 1926 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Rudy married Edna May Duffy. They had Jimmy born March 8, 1964 in Port Harby, Canada. Bernice born Feb 4, 1968 in Albert Bay, Canada.
Sylvia Tapanila Simonson's sister and her husband also went to Russia with their two children. All of them made it out alive, but they were trapped in Russia for over 12 years. Again, the ransom was paid 3 times. The Russians would not let them go. They suffered greatly.
Needless to say the Tapanila famiy HATES RUSSIANS for what they did to our family! If you want to make us mad say, "I like Communism!" Then you better run for your life because we will be verrrrry angry!
