I've a letter from 1960 that states Jim Tanner took a young boy lost in the woods to his home, across the river, into Kentucky. The boy was named Kemp (nearly certain, George Kemp). The letter further states Jim raised the Kemp boy because his parents had been murdered by renegades and deserters of the civil war.
I'm hoping to learn more of this situation and hoping maybe this story was passed along in a Tanner family.
Thanks for reading,
Barbara
