From the Hamburg Passenger Lists: Ship Elida, Hamburg to New York, Arrived 7 Sept 1855. TAIFER, Wenzel 26, Antonio 24, Wenzel 2. From: Jeleni, Bohemia.
This family is also listed (but under the spelling Taiper) in: IOWA-BOUND Arrivals at the port of NY, by Micheal Cassady. In Hawkeye Heritage (IA Genealogical Soc., Des Moines) Vol. 21:1 (Spring 1986), pp 12-22.
If anyone knows anything additional about the origins or this family, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Mary,
I am a Taifer. My family came from Eastern Europe some time between the 1850's and 1880's. Are you related to the Taifers? I am just starting to research my history.

Dan,
Unfortunately, I am not related to this TAIFER family. My ancestors came with a group of individuals on this voyage and I am trying to narrow down the village of origin by trying to contact the other surnames shown. "Jeleni" could be one of a number of villages, but I'm starting to guess that it might have been Horni Jeleni or Dolni Jeleni.
The surnames of the other Bohemian families from Jeleni on this manifest were SCHIMBERSKY, HORSKY (or HARSKY), and ANDRACZEK. Any of these surnames ring a bell?
