In response to George Washington Taff in Alabama, my great grandfather was also named George Washington Taff, born approx 1860, died in 1941 +/- do not know from whence he came to Florida, his mother was Sarah Welch, who remarried a Boykin, know nothing of her background, nor of G.W.Taff's father. Any help would be appreciated. He may have been from from S.C. anyway stayed in North Florida from age 5 until his death.

George Washington Taft was born circa 1800 GA. (I originally posted born in AL but that was wrong). He lived for a while in Russell Co. AL and then ended up in Coosa Co. AL. His children were: James c1829 GA, Letitia c1831 GA, John c1833 GA, Nancy c1838 GA, Edwin 1840 AL, Washington c1843 AL, and Henry c1845 AL. I have been unable to find out who GW's parents were nor do I have any information on his children other than Edwin (my husband's line). If you could find out where your GW was born (census records) maybe we could make a connection.

I am curious as to whether George Washington Taft might be my g-g-g-grandfather (mother's side). I saw your note and did a little research on my own. He did turn up in Coosa County, Alabama, in 1860, as did James. My g-grandfather was James William Taft who lived in Clay County - but those are adjoining counties and one time were part of one big county, I believe. James William was born around 1845 or so, and I believe he may be one of the sons or grandsons of GW Taft. James named his son, my grandfather, George William Taft.

At any rate, I would be glad to share any information I have and would be grateful for any you have.

Thanks,

Hi Broward,

It's your "cousin." (granddaughter of Robert Calhoun Taff,Sr. and Sena Pelt). I also heard that our great grandfather George Washington Taff may have come from South Carolina. Stories say that he just "appeared" in Wakulla County and he never spoke of his family. Don't know how true that is though.

Would be interested to know when and if you find out anything. I have not been able to go to the courthouse to check the records, but I do believe a lot was destroyed in the fire years back, from what I hear. His death certificate may tell you something.

You can email me direct if you like.

I am the gggranddaughter of Caroline Jane Logan Taff. I have not been able to locate her husband, but am thinking it might be Edward Jackson Taff. I know he married Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Baggett in 1875, but I am thinking he was married to Caroline sometime after 1860 and they had a child Laura V. in 1870. They must have separated before Caroline's mother moved to Stone Count Texas because she is living there after 1880, sometime under her maiden name and sometimes with the name Taff.
