Hello Kelly,

Ludwig Eberhard is not in my database. The line on which I have worked for friends is descended from Johann Frederich Leonard Tafel, b. 1800 Wuerttemburg, Germany, d. 1880, Philadelphia, PA, who was a follower of Immanuel Swedenborg and a founder of the Swedenborgian Church in Germany and the United States. I have a fair amount of information on that family, but I don't know if your Ludwig fits into it. I am a snowbird and I'm on the road for a month, starting tomorrow, so my e-mail access will be limited, but I can try to help you.

Hello Bob,

Thank you for the reply on Louis Oliver (aka Ludwig Eberhard) Tafel. He is a 2nd cousin-once-removed from Leonard Tafel. I am working on a Civil War article about the Tafels & the American Civil War. Louis' son, and 4 of Leonard's sons fought in that. I am hoping to come up with some pictures for Louis Oliver Tafel's family. If you have information on the Civil War participation of Leonard's sons, any information would be wonderful. The least is known about the service of Louis Hermann Tafel, he was with the 49th VA.

Please reply when you have some time and email access.

Thank - Kelly

This is the only Civil War info I have on the Tafel clan, and the reference is included. Good luck with your project.

Bob

The full name of Paul Ludwig Louis Herman Tafel appears twice in the International Genealogical Index (IGI) of the Mormon Church, both times in connection with his marriages to Emilie and Anna Dutt. In all the other records, including the census records with Emilie and Anna, he is simply listed as Louis H. Tafel, sometimes spelled Louis, sometimes Lewis, depending on who was doing the writing.

Actually, the project is coming along fairly well. I've done the first installment, and suspect there will be at least 2 more. Thanks for the information on Lewis H. I now have some dates to work with in weaving the story. While I don't want this to be a rehashing of the Civil War, I do want to put the 5 family members into context with the times, and for that I need dates and such to get the 'social history' information which is appropriate. Thanks so much for your help. I'm fairly well covered on Gustav Tafel (son of Leonard), and Hugo (son of Leonard). I have the pension files for Adolph Julis (son of Leonard), and now some information on Lewis H. Louis Oliver (aka. Ludwig Ebhard) Tafel's son was Henry C. He was killed at Gettysburg, and I have his pension file. It's this family where I am hoping to find some pictures.

Thanks - Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I think I may have a picture with a Civil War soldier in it. I don't have the flash disk here to check it. I'll do so back in the RV and see what I can find... I may be thinking of the wrong Civil War family.

I should be able to get back to you by early next week.

Bob,

If you have pictures of any of the Tafel Civil War Veterans,in uniform, that would be terrific. The one I would really like to find would be from the Tafel Family in Pittsburgh, but, I'm beginning to think that is a lost cause. I have spent many months trying to find a picture of the 62nd PA Co L, but, there doesn't seem to be any of those, either. Feel free to use my direct email: bfetherlin@att.net. Thanks - Kelly
