I have managed to trace my TAFE family tree back to a James TAFE who I believe was born around 1826 in Ireland. It would appear that he married a Mary Burn who herself was born around 1831. I have established that they then came to England and had at least three children, James, Peter and Thomas two of which were born in Kirkdale.
I am now looking for some info regarding James Tafe. There appears to be some variations of the TAFE name, i.e. TAAFE, TAAFFE, TAFFE. How/why does this occur, it makes tracing even more difficult! Anyway any info on TAFE or varients, originating from Ireland would be helpful thanks

Hi Diane Thanks for your reply. It would indeed appear that we are related !! I have a James Tafe (1855) France in my tree although the line I follow is his brother Thomas. I would be really interested if you find anything on the James (1826) as this is where I came to a bit of a stop. I have a txt file I will send to your E Mail address which includes all the information I have on my family tree to date.

Hi, Steve! I'm going away for a few days but when i get back the wedding cert.should be here. I am 99% sure that James born in France is the one ,although there is one other possible James Taffe on the 1881 census but both my dad and I think he is unlikely. Great to hear from you. Out of interest where abouts in the world are you? speak to you when we get back Diane

I recently was doing a search and this site poped up. My name is Thomas Tafe and I was born in Philadelphia, PA. It was quite suprising to finally come across fellow "Tafe's". It is not a very name and am glad to see I am not one of the few remaining.

Hello Stephen, My maiden name is Tafe. I live in South Australia. My Dad explained to me that when families were immigrating to Australia (for example)convicts. Some were unable to read or write so the person marking them off the list would write the name as he heard it. Bear in mind, these immigrants had an Irish accent. Therefore you could have someone saying their name is Tafe and the person writing it down hears "Tief". Another example is my great grandfather thought he was making life much simpler by taking out an A from the original family name of Taafe. This needless to say has created havoc with ancestry research.
Well, enough of my ramblings but I hope it answered one aspect of your query. Cheers, Virginia McGovern
