Dear Kelly,
My grandmother's maiden name was Paterno. She was from Castelmezzano
as my parents were. I still have many relatives in Castelmezzano and my parents grew up
there so e-mail me what info you have now
and what you need and i'll try to get it.
Sal
p.s. Are you in the states? My aunt in Potenza
told me about an American lady who came to the
town looking for info some years back (from conneticut).

I am tracing my ancestors from Castelmezzano, Italy and know that Paterno was the family name of my great-great grandmother. My grandfather Guiseppe Michele Santoro emigrated from Castelmezzano as a child with his family sometime in the 1880's. His mother's name was Caterina Beneventi. She had a sister, Carmela; father, Peter Beneventi; and her mother was a Paterno.
She was related to the mayor, Giovanni Beneventi at the time of my grandfathers birth on May 21,1879. When they emigrated to the U.S. they stayed briefly with a Dr. Charles Paterno in N.Y.C. before relocating to Paterson, N.J. Would this be any relation to you? If so, would you know the name of my great-great grandmother Paterno? Also, any history behind the emigrations at that time?

I just established in June of this year that my maternal grandfather, Gregorio Grippo, was born in Castelmezzano in 1873 and came to NYC in 1901. For the last 3 months I have been reviewing the LDS microfilm for 1866-1910 births, marriages and deaths in Castelmezzano. Yesterday I found a couple of Beneventi direct ancestors when going through the death records. They are:
Vittoria Beneventi, born about 1800, wife of Domenico Grippo and mother of my great-grandfather Giuseppe Grippo
Serafina Beneventi, born about 1775, wife of Dominico Ferreri and mother of my gg-grandfather Gregorio Ferreri
Please reply if you see any connection to your family tree or would like to collaborate in some way with me.
