Hello Pattee
Sounds like your grandfather and my grandfather were brothers! My grandfather was Piotr Tabaka. My mom tells me he had a brother that lived in Ironwood, MI.

He also had a brother Anton that lived in Minneapolis for a while.

There are today MANY Tabakas living in and around Minneapolis. Piotr had 12 children.

By the way, talking to my mom...no one seems to know much about Adam Tabaka.

My mom, my uncle Pete, and my sister all visited Poland a few times back in the 1970's. My sister spent a summer in Poland during the big Solidarity strike.

Of course, all spent plenty of time in Wolka where they visited and stayed with the Tabakas there. My mom's family spoke Polish at home, so she was completely bilingual (all the kids were). She brought back some very interesting stories about the Tabakas in Poland. They were very poor, small town folk.

My impression was that the Tabakas have done much better in the USA than in Poland. Of course, my mother's family was dirt poor, living in a very small house in the HUGE Polish community in Minneapolis. Piotr worked for the railroad almost until the day he died.

Today, there are probably over 100 descendents of Piotr living in and around Minneapolis, MN.

Tabaka connection: My grandfather was Walter Tabaka, lived in Alpha Michigan, near Iron Mountain, had 4 children, married to Sophie Franz. Uncertain if he was a relative of any of these Tabaka's, but I am very curious. Hope to hear from you.

The only Walter Tabaka in my line, is a son of Piotr Tabaka. Walter was born in MN on June 2, 1918, died February 14, 2004, and was married to a Teresa. I only have names of 3 children: (Suzanne, Thomas, & Peter). I do have a Walenty (Valentine) Tabaka that was born in Poland and lived in Ironwood MI, but he was married to Mary Swaja and they had 8 children.
Unfortunately, there are many Tabaka branches, and they all reused the same family names, so it can get very confusing.

Did any of your Tabakas live or visit relatives in Milwaukee, WI during the 1910s-1920s?

My great-great grandmother was Magdalen Kaczmarek (nee Tabaka). She came to Milwaukee from Posen, Poland in 1904. I also have a picture of a Sophie Tabaka that was taken in Milwaukee, WI in about 1919.

I am waiting to hear back from a cousin that may have known a little more about our Tabakas. Hopefully he will be able to tell me who the family was. If so, and we are related, I would be happy to share a pic of Sophie with you.

My grandfather, Walter Tabaka, was born in 1895 in Poland and died in 1975 in Alpha, MI. His parents were William and Francis Tabaka. He had a brother that I was aware of, but I don't have information about him. I think he was buried in MI as well. Sophie Franz Tabaka was my grandmother.

I remember that my grandparents went to Milwaukee from time to time to visit relatives, but don't have information on who that was.

Hope this helps as you review your information.
