I am looking for the connection between the TABAKA family and the TABASINSKE-TABACZYNSKI-TABASINSKY-TABASINSKI family. My great grand mother (Electa Jane Widner) married Thomas Frank Tabasinske - he was from Wisconsin. Any information at all would be appreciated.

My Father, James Tabaka, spent many years gathering info on the Tabaka Family. Before his death in 1999, he compiled most of the info on a website - http://www.siteform.com/tabaka/index.htm

I did locate your greatgrandparents in there.

Take a look!

Hopefully, you come back to this board occasionally and read this thread. Your father's website is obviously no longer available. I would be interested in seeing his information, if it si still available.

This family emigrated to the US under the surname Tabaka on the ship Corvo in 1847 (from Hamburg to NY). They appeared on the 1850 Federal Census under the name Tobak in Milwaukee Wisconsin. They appeared on the 1860 Federal census in Barton, Washington Co, Wisconsin under the surname Tobacco. On the 1870 Federal Census in Sadorus Twp, Champaign Co, Illinois, most of the family appeared under the surname Tabaka.

Franz (aka Frank) fought in the Civil War in the 12th Wisconsin Infantry under the surname Tobacco. My mother has his pension papers confirming this. Michael fought with the 7th Wisconsin Light Artillery, and 104th Illinois infantry under the surnames Tobaka and Tobacco. Kasimir (aka Charles) fought with 4th and 12th Illinois Cavalry under the surnames Tobaka and Tabaka. Michael had the surnames Tabaka and Tabasinsky listed on his pension papers along with the specific artillery unit; confirming his identity These papers appear to have been initiated in 1876 (in Iowa).

Add in the misspellings on the census and Michael is a Tabrensky, Tubasensky, etc. I cannot find him on the 1870 census, so it is likely that his name was severely misspelled them, too.

After some looking on Ancestry.com, it appears that your Thomas Frank Tabasinske is the son of Thomas Tabaka (1793-1875). The evidence is circumstantial, but I believe that it is strong enough. Thomas is listed on the 1885 Iowa State Census records for Cass County, Iowa. Also, listed on the 1885 Iowa State Census records for Cass County, Iowa are Michael Tabasinsky (aka Michael Tabaka/Tobaka/Tobacco) and Mary J (Tabaka) Glowczewsky. As I mentioned in my previous post, he is definitely the son of Thomas & Frances(ka) Tabaka based on his Civil War service records. He is the only person with even a remotely similar name to serve in the 7th Independent Battery of the Wisconsin Light Artillery. Both the Tabaka and Tabasinsky names are listed on his pension records.

Since the Iowa State Census records list the birth date, the birth place, the parents names (including mother's maiden name) it is easy to verify that this Mary is the daughter of Thomas & Frances(ka) Tabaka. She listed her father as Thomas Tabaka. Her birth place is listed as Wisconsin, and her birth year (1852) is identical to the birth year listed for her on the 1860 Federal Census in Barton, Washington, Wisconsin.

There is a grave for a Thomas Tabasinsky in Victoria Cemetery, Massena, Cass County, Iowa. I assume that this is your (and my) Thomas Tabaka. This spelling provides a further linkage between the Thomas Tabasinske and Michael Tabasinski on the Iowa Census.

Her is the link to Thomas' grave site:

I am trying to find my great-great grandmother's family. My great-great grandmother was named Magdalena Tabaka (born 1853). She came to the United States from Poland in 1905. She was Magdalena Tabaka Kaczmarek when she immigrated. Her husband Franciscus Kaczmarek died in Poland in 1902.

Until recently, I thought Magdalena was the only Tabaka (from my family) that came to the U.S.; however, I came across a photo of a Sophia (Sophie) Tabaka dated 1919. It was a black and white photo (obv.) and that made it hard to tell her age. I would have to guess she was somewhere between 20-40? However, I am also not sure if she was a Tabaka by birth or by marriage and I have no other details about her.

Yesterday, a gentleman doing family research for me in Poland, sent me some additional info on the Tabakas.

Thomas Tabaka married Francisca Cierzmiewska in 1846 in Kaczanowo, Poland.

These are their kids:

Sophia b. 8 May 1848 (think she would have been too old to be the Sophia in the pic, but wonder if one of her brothers named a daughter after her)
Nicolaus b. 4 Dec 1849
Josepha b. 2 Mar 1851
Magdalena b. 17 May 1853 (My great-great grandmother)
Melchior b. 3 Jan 1855
(no more until 1860)

If you know any more about the people above, or think your Tabakas are somehow connected to mine, I would be very interested in hearing more.

Thanks,

Gillian

I've noticed a number of Tabaka families on the message boards, but have no way of really knowing if we're related.

My relative is my maternal grandfather: Walter Tabaka, B. 5/11/1892 in Ostroleka, Poland, D. 9/9/1975 in Alpha, MI. He married Sophie Franz in Crystal Falls, MI on 9/11/1928. The had four children: Lorraine, Joseph, Donald and Marian.

Walter Tabaka had a brother in Michigan, but I don't have any information for him. I think he is buried in Crystal Falls, Michigan. I know that my grandparents used to visit relatives in Milwaukee and Chicago, but I don't know who these people were.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.
