Hi Lorraine,
Check out my Taffe family tree - it's public. I have some information on the John Taaffe you asked about. Found the baptism record of Mary Taaffe, daughter of John Taaffe and Elizabeth Hoey in Ireland (as you noted). And then I can find a birth record of Richard Taffe, their son born in 1864 in Victoria, Australia. Laurence and Francis were born in between and I have information on their marraiges and deaths in Australia. But I haven't been able to confirm their birth in Australia or Ireland...

I was wondering how you knew when John and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia.... and that John (their son) was born in Ireland.... I think I found that John, son of John and Elizabeth died in Swan Hill in 1881. The record shows his age as 26, so birth in 1855

I seem to be at a dead end to figure out about John (husband of Elizabeth) in Ireland. I did find records for Elizabeth Hoey's baptism in Dunleer though...

Thanks for answering,
theresa

Hi Theresa, thanks for your message although not sure if for me as did not give you some of the info mentioned but would like to have. Unfortunately, can't check your family tree for now, as no longer a member of Ancestry.

Re, Richard Taffe, he was born on 20th., July 1863 in Gherang Gherang and his Birth registered on 20th., April 1864 by John Taffe. Patrick I'm not sure where or when he was born but he was deceased prior to this date.

I have Laurence born in Geelong (but not confirmed) in 1858, Francis in Winchelsea 1860 and Eliza in Mt. Moriac 1861. I can find no record of their births at all.

I don't know when John & Elizabeth came to Australia but I have searched between 1854 & 1858 when Laurence was born in Australia, without success. I'm more than happy to share any certificates I have and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind nregards,
Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine,
Thanks so much for your reply. It is hugely helpful that you know that Francis was born in Winchelsea. There is a letter between a Catherine Taft of Providence, RI written in 1883 (actually Taaffe family headed by Laurence). The letter mentions that Laurence has a brother John who lives in Winchelsea. Until now, I didn't have a way to place my g-g-grandfather John Taaffe in Winchelsea. On the ancestry.com records, I can't see the information that you have about the birthplaces. How do you know where Francis and Eliza were born? If I can connect the 1883 letter with John Taaffe, then it helps to confirm that John Taaffe was from Paughanstown, Co. Louth.

I really appreciate your help. Regards, theresa

HI have the Marriage Certificate for Mary Taff, daughter of John Taff and Elizabeth Hoye (Hoey) as she married an ancestor of mine. At her death aged 32 she had been a resident of Victoria for 29 years born County of Louth Ireland. I am fairy sure it is the same family you are talking about.
