Hi, I wonder if this can help you. Different people in my family used any of the variants of Szafran, Szafranski or Schafron.
My grandfather's generation were people born in ~1900 - 1920. You are about the right age to be a child of one of these people. The siblings my grandfather's generation were Frank Szafran, George Schafron and Ben, Joe, Anna-Ann-or-Anne, plus a second sister who became a nun. Several of the kids in this family were also raised in orphanages near Pittsburgh.
The sister Anna married a man named Golombiewski. I only have the phonetic pronunciation of that name so chances are good it is mis-spelled.
Maybe we are cousins.
