I believe My gg grandmother Mary Syms/Symes was from Broadclyst. She was born about 1812 and her father William was an ostler according to the marriage certificate of her marriage to William Bassett in Egloshayle, Cornwall on 13 August 1839. She was previously married to Richard Rook, Rooke or Rookes in 1832 at Tedburn St Mary, Devon.

Mary and William Bassett immigrated to New Zealand, embarking from Plymouth on the' Duke of Roxburgh' in October 1839 and arriving at Petone New Zealand on 8 February 1840. We have just had a Bassett Jubilee to celebrate 175 years of our family in NZ.

Mary had one daughter in 1838, presumably to Richard Rook, and ten children to William Bassett, all of whom grew to adulthood.

Can you help? I'd love to know more about the family of a woman who faced tremendous difficulties and survived in a new harsh land.
