name of patronimic of witness/godparents to their children:

Dear Jill,

I don't know that you're aware of this, but many of the names you mention are very Jewish. Tsibulsky and all of its variants can be found on a site www.jewishgen.org. Moiseev is absolutely Jewish, meaning son of Moses, and not a name that would have been given to Russian Orthodox boy. Pshikh sounds like a corruption of Peisach and sounds extremely Jewish and not one bit Russian. I studied Russian. This is not a Russian name. Variants of it can also be found on jewishgen.org.

Klinevich can also be found on jewishgen.org. It is probably "son of Kline" which is another Jewish name. Kovalevich can go either way, but may also be Jewish.

I can understand why you've been having difficulty tracing your husband's line. You may just not have been looking in the right place, not realizing that these are Russian Jewish names.

I am intrigued by many similarities between your husband's genealogy and my own. My grandfather's name was Menascha Zibulsky. I had a brother Moishe (Moses) whom we called Misha and and twin brothers Pablo and Pedro. My mother's name was Dimitria and she called me Tama. We were brought to the States from Argentina and all separated.

Curious!

Good luck in your search,

Tamara Farache

Thank you for the information. I will keep it in the back of my mind. I don't know what to say since the documents I have come with authentication stating Pavel Moiseev Tsibulsky and his lawful wife Theodosia Dimitrieva, maiden name Pshikh Both are of Russian orthodox origin. Pavel/Paul's Alien Reg Card WWI states from Minsk, White Russia

Paul Maxim Sybalsky "Poul Sybalski/Tsibulsky" immigrated from near Minsk, Russia. Minsk is now in Belarus.

From one of Pavel's sons baptism record--states:
Occupation, name of patronimic of witness/godparents:
Pavel Mikhailovich Klinevich-the Austrian ambassador from Galitsia and Anna
Ivanova Tamalevskaya
Village: Krivitcha
county/region: Minskaya Gubernia

Hand written by Theodosia talks about her son's Ivan and Moisey's baptism. Also stating Brother-in-law Nikolai Kovalevich
sister-in-law Ekaterina Marshalk

It certainly is a tangled mess!

Dear Jill,

Jewish is an ethnicity and a religion. It is not mutually exclusive that the family was of Jewish origin but of Christian religion. Many Jews converted to save themselves from persecution or simply because they wanted to. And yes, there were Jews from Minsk and Belarus. Jews also moved around a lot and hid their identities if they needed to, especially in places in Russia where they were not supposed to be found.

If you're searching for ethnic origins, you may find the Jewish website more helpful. And since you haven't had much success elsewhere, you might find different and interesting results there.

If Theodosia is talking about her father-in-law Moisey's baptism, he likely wasn't baptised as an infant.

By the way, Galicia, Galitsia had a very large Jewish population.

As I stated hand written by Theodosia talks about her son's Ivan and Moisey's baptism. So no clue where you got her father in-laws baptism. Having her children's godfather being an Austrian ambassador from Galitsia leads me to believe they were a family of some prominence or that there is some family connection.

Again I will keep info you have passed along.

I thought Theodosia's husband was Pavel Moiseev, that is, Paul, son of Moisey, which would make Moisey her father-in-law if that Moisey was the same one. I didn't notice a Moisey among her children.
