The book "Sy-Hugenotten" by Oqueka and Wendt [1981] can be found in the on-line catalogue of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, which can lend a microfilm copy of the book to any Family History Center in the United States (maybe not in Germany because of privacy laws). Also, Hans Wendt once gave me a printed copy, so I can provide look-up and photocopies if you can be more specific about the inquiry.

Michael Schulz
Redwood City, CA 94061

Hi Todd,
I have had to do some guess work with regard to the Sys but I believe this entry in the 1860 census is them:
Wisconsin, Manitowoc, Schleswig, p. 514-515
1 Sep 1860
p. 514 lines 36-40
house 1957/family 1825
Abraham Lee(sic) 48 M Farmer 600 200 Prussia
August 24 M Carpenter and joiner - 100 Prussia
William 21 M -- Prussia
Gustav 15 M -- Prussia
Charles 14 M -- Prussia
page 515
lines 1-2
August See 15 M - - Prussia
Catherine 5 F Wisconsin

As you can see the first page spells the family name "Lee" and the continuing entry on the next page goes to "See" I am not sure why there are two Augusts. The 1870 census for Manitowoc Co. lists August Sy, carpenter and joiner, as 32 so the age is a bit off but I think this is the same man as the August Sy who married my gr-gr-gr-aunt. An August Sy turned up later in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and I have a hunch that my gr-gr-gr-aunt died fairly young. They named their one child Gustav which might have been a family name. Sorry this is so sketchy, and not much about Abraham Sy but if it helps you piece anything together, I would be interested to hear it.
Thanks,
Regan
Re: SY family legends and stories

There has been a legend in my branch of the Sy family that the name was shortened from "de Saveny" by taking the first and last letters of Saveny. This was documented in a letter written by Vera Sy in 1948. This letter was written to Robert and Gladys Sy. The letter said that the former members of our family were Frenchmen. They belonged to the first Protestants who were called Huguenots. In the seventeenth century they had to flee from France to Germany. At this time they changed their name. This was what she remembered from an old French bible that her husband received from his father. The bible was lost during WWII.

I have traced the family beyond the seventeenth century so I know this legend is not true.

An update:
I have found August and Catharina in the 1870 census for Manitowoc Co., Schleswig Township, WI--
August was 32, so born 1838, in Prussia. He was a carpenter.
Catharina was 35, born in Prussia, and they had a son, Gustav who was 7, so born 1863 in Wisconsin.

The 1860 census (same locality) lists a family noted as "Lee" on one page and "See" on the next, but I think these are the Sys: (all born in Prussia except the last)
Lee, Abraham 48 M Farmer
August 24 M Carpenter and joiner
William 21 M
Gustav 15 M
Charles 14 M
(next page)
See, August 15 m Prussia
Catherine 5 f Wisconsin
This record was made 4 Sep 1860, a couple of months before August would have married Catharine. There are obviously some censustaker's errors here but I think this is the family.

Anyway, if any of this rings any bells, I would like to know more, share, etc.

August Sy & Catharina Tiedemann Wisconsin

Hi,
I am looking for information about an August Sy who married Catharina Tiedemann 22 November 1860 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Catharina Tiedemann, my gr-gr-grand-aunt, was born about 1835 in Schleswig-Holstein and emigrated with her parents, Christian and Anna Tiedemann, in 1853 to New Holstein, Calumet County, Wisconsin. I would like to know if they had a family, etc. All I know of August is that he was from Prussia and that he filed a Declaration of Intent in Calumet County on 1 April 1859.
Any leads appreciated.
Regan Oakley
rlo8@columbia.edu
Would you have a list of the children for the above named couple? I have an August Sy and Auguste Boening attending the Holy Ghost Church in Bergholz, New York and there are listed 5 children. There are no dates however for August and Auguste.
You can email me at dmflack@pcom.net and I can pass on the information I have for the children.

Mary

Thank you Michael. I believe your grandfather Arthur Sattelberg and my grandmother Martha Sattelberg may have been brother and sister. I guess this would make us 2nd cousins. If you think this is correct please reply to me directly at forgingahead@rmi.net or reply to the message board. I would be interested in any other family ancestry information you might have as I'm just getting started. Thank you in advance.

August Sy and Augusta Boening

Thanks for responding. My great grandma Augusta Sy was born to August and Augusta (I'm not positive about the 'a' on Augusta, but I'm pretty sure) Louise Boening in Germany. They immigrated to the U.S. probably in the late 1800s. I'm not sure where they settled. However, my great grandma ended up marrying William Sattelberg of New York. So we may have a connection.

As far as the children of August Sy and Augusta Louise Boening, I believe they had six children: Augusta, Albert, Gustave, Herman, John, and Anna.
Let me know what you think.

I am looking for any ancestral information on my gggrandpa August Sy. He married Augusta Louise Boening. I believe they may have lived in the Saginaw, MI area, but I'm not sure.
