J. S Swygert Dies
Has Been Ill Long Time- Funeral This Afternoon
John Sanders Swygert, president of Jones-Swygert Furniture Company, died at his residence, 503 Maple Street yesterday shortly after noon after an illness covering three years. Mr. Swygert was a native of Comumbia and had spent his entire life of 61 years in the city. He was educated in the schools of Columbia and early in life earned a reputation for fair dealing and honesty which had won many friends to his side.
In 1892 he married Miss Janes Mattie Clark of Union who preceeded him to the grave by 15 years. He was the son of S. D. SWYGERT AND ABIGAIL SWYGERT, also natives of Columbia. Mr. Swygert was an active private citizen and made friends with all with whom he came in contact. He was for many years a trustee of Shandon school and a member of the Shandon town council before that suburb was incorporated in the city. He was a furniture dealer for many years, entering the trade over 25 years ago. He established himself with a well know house in early life and eight years ago became a joint owner with M. K. Jones in the Jones-Swygert Comapny. His home was at 1551 Park Street until the death of his wife when he moved to the present home in Shandon.
Mr. Swygert had been in poor health for the past three years and had visited numerous heath resorts, but to no avail. For the past three months his condition has been serious. Surviving him are two children, John D. Swygert secretary of the Jones-Swygert company, Columbia and Mrs. George Farr, 803 Maple Street besides his mother, Mrs. Abigail Swygert 1223 Lady Street, and two sisters, Mrs. J. R. LaSAlle and Mrs. J. A. Rencher, both of Birmingham Al.
The funeral service will be conducted at the residence Monday morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be in Elmwood. The pallbearers are Honorary, C C Pearce, Wade Hampton Gibbes, C H Barron, Dr. T C Lucas, S T Carter, Robert Blakels, Joseph Beil and J M Van Meire; active will be S D Friday, S M Clarkson, Jeff May, W P Etchison, S M Scott and W A Tunander
