I have just seen this message which was intended for my daughter, Nicola Cordier, I am doing some research into Vernon Swatton and logged onto this site and your post came up. I see it was a long time ago so not sure if you are still online but any leads would be grateful as I can get no information from the military channels.

I'm new to Ancestry so only just found this section.

I believe the surname Swatton (Swaton) may originate from a small hamlet in Lincolnshire also called Swaton, on the main road from Boston to Grantham. It has a large church and was obviously once prosperous.

My own family originate in Hampshire (St Mary Bourne)

My Swatton ancesters came from Wiltshire.

In particualr I am interested in finding any info relating to my great grandmother Amy Swatton born 1870 in Devizes to Henry Swatton born abt. 1843 in Stanton, Wiltshire died 1914 and married Louisa Smart in 1865 in bromham, Wiltshire, Louisa died in 1906 in Devizes. Amy married William Moon in Hendon 1910 - I am unable to out what happened to Amy after this date and would welcome any information on her and the Swatton family

I saw the Swatton family tree mentioned on Ancestry.com in relation to a relative of mine Thomas Adair, born 1834 in Ireland. Died 1896 in Oklahoma Territory. He was my great grandfather. I have more information.

My grandfather was Edward Joseph Swaton. His father was Anton Swaton (Svaton). Is one of your relatives a brother of Edward (Joseph Anton Swaton)? Hello,

My mothers family is Swatton from Berkshire, mostly around the Wantage and Hungerford districts but I believe there may also be a connection to All Cannings in Wiltshire back to early 1800s.
If there is anything you can supply that might help this connection it would be greatfully received!

Any information of Jesse E. Swaton, son of Edward Joseph Swaton and Irene Goss or Dorothy Swaton and Barbara Swaton, dauthers of Edward Joseph Swaton and mother with the maiden name of Silva. A woman named Elizabeth Swaton took care of Dorothy Swaton for many years and was married to Edward Joseph Swaton at some point. Jesse E. Swaton had a brother Harvey Lloyd Swaton. All of these people were living in California at their death and some could still be alive.

Have just read your message re the family name Swatton. My maiden name was Swatton, and I was born in Bournemouth. My Granfather Swatton lived in Winchester, but had relatives in Wiltshire, specifically Collingbourne Ducis, where my father spent much of his childhood with my Great Aunt Hannah. I think her name was Pinchin. Maybe she was a Swatton who had married!

Just surfing the Net, I found your request for info on Swattons in Hampshire. My maiden name was Swatton. My grandfather Philip Swatton had a smallholding in Frogham, not far from Fordingbridge, up to the mid-1970s. He was married to Annie (obviously not the Annie Swatton of your e-mail, but the coincidence struck me!). My father's name was Philip Reginald Samuel Swatton, born 1914. He had 3 brothers and a half-sister: Aubrey (aka Jack), Eric, Elsie, I forget the other brother's name, but he was illegitimate and his birth was never registered.
Not sure if any of this is useful! Good luck with your quest.

I can also share quite alot of information about the Shaw side of the family with you so yes I think we will go via email addresses for that.

It would be great if you could look up the birth entries of Mark & Jane for me. I have little go go on really though.

Mark was aged 40 at the time of marriage and Jane was 24. Year of marriage being 1897.

Just a quick one with great news. It would appear we are related :o)

I have just received the marriage certificate today for Mark SHAW and Jane SWATTEN. Alfred SWATTEN is listed as the father.

I have a list of several SWATTENs from Hampshire off the 1881 census disc. A couple of Charles's there too.

I am shooting up to my parents this weekend so I will post the census info early next week.

Not much joy looking for Charles on the 1881 census - no entry found living in Durham in 1881.

So I have ran a search for all the Swattens on the census born in Hampshire and have a list of about 30 to hunt through for you. I will send all the Whitchurch entries to the list and hopefully Charles will turn up.

The only details I have on my great grandmother Jane SWATTEN is that she was married to Mark SHAW by 1904 as she appears on my grandfathers birth certificate.

I know nothing else at this stage as details are proving difficult to get. I have requested that the Durham Archive office run several searches to locate ther marriage and all have turned up blank.

I have a whole list of marriage registers which have been searched for their marriage in Durham - dating back to 1837.

On the birth certificate entry of 1904 Jane was the informant and lived at 3 Bainbridge Street, Belmont DURHAM.

I havent had the opportunity to check the 1901 census at a library but I am sure this will be the most fruitful option.

Mark SHAW was not born in DURHAM it is believed he was born in CROWLE, Lincolnshire but this is not yet confirmed either!!!

That's my Jane SWATTEN!!

Your Jane SWATTEN (Would be great if they were the same person) according to the 1881 census entry was born in South Church, DURHAM and she was 7 years old in 1881. I will post the 1881 census entry for you in a moment as several siblings are mentioned.

As I said Jane is proving a little elusive at the moment. I have very little details to go on.

She married my grandfather Mark SHAW but I have been unable to track the marriage in Durham.

I do have an 1881 census entry for a Jane Swatten born in South Church, Durham but I havent yet made this a link to my Jane Swatten.

You may be interested in the 1881 entry though as the parentage line is Alfred Swatten born in Whitechurch, Hampshire.

I am researching the Swattons from Wiltshire. My grt.grt.grt.grandfather was Alexander Swatton. Do not know who he married but he had a son Thomas born in Collingbourne c 1814/1815. He married a Maria Whicher in Thruxton in 1841. The marriage shows thomas with occupation as a groom living in North Tidworth. Alexander's occupation was shown as a labourer.

Jane, I can't believe it's over a year since I last looked at this site! I remember you as a very little girl when I used to visit Aunty Flo & Uncle Jack in Southampton. I once took you to Pear Tree Park but I doubt if you remember. My dad (Philip) died in 1986 and I have lost touch with everyone else. We have contacted before. My grt.grt.grt.grandfather was Alexander Swatton,my line is from his youngest son Thomas born 1813 C/Ducis. He married a Maria Whicher in 1841 in Thruxton. Maria had a sister Louisa who married an Emmanuel Vince in 1835. They had a daughter Mary Ann born c1844. Lovelace Swatton, my grt.grandfather Alfred Tom's cousin, married a Mary Ann Vince in1866 ......do you know if these two Mary Ann Vinces are one and the same?If So could it be they were introduced through Thomas and his brother William or maybe Alfred and Maria?

Read your message. My grandmother was Esther Marie Swatton born in Paddington 1895,daughter of Alfred Tom Swatton born Surbiton Surrey 1853, son Of Thomas Swatton born Collingbourne Ducis Wilts 1813, son Of Alexander Swatton born Enford 1776. Do any of these names connect with your family?
