Could you be possibly spelling the name wrong? My grandfather was Swazay sounds like Swaczy. His father was Walter Swazay. He was born 1909.He seems to have just appeared out of nowhere. Patti Hurst

Good question!

Hello...Yes, that's a good question, actually. My grandmother spelled her maiden name Swachey, but when I searched the internet, I found multiple people by the name of Swaczy, and assumed that my ancestors changed the spelling when they arrived in America.

You seem to have yet another variation. Is your Swazay ancestor from the Ukraine, or another country? Any information that you could contribute would be great! Thanks, Dan M.

Daniel, It's been a long time since I visited the genealogy web. Sorry I took so long. There is not one person that knows where my grandfather came from. But I have been told that swazay is a polish name?I don't know.I did find out my great-great grandmother was India Anna Picket, she married a swazay was born here in Indiana.Must of came in from out of state and they named her after Indiana(just guessing at the name thing)But maybe swazay and swaczy are the same.Did any of your family move south?

Dear Patti, it's great to see you back...I didn't realize that there had been posts this year yet...I have been in touch with Melika from Italy, she has a great deal of information on her family names, but nothing before their emigration from Ukraine to New Jersey. I am actually going to do some research on vacation time in the middle of March, and I will post anything that I find then. As for the name, it seems that names like Swaczy can be shared among many different Slavic countries..my surname is found from the Czech Republic to the Ukraine. It seems that my great-grandfather's surname was originally pronounced something like Swet-chee, or something. I will see what I can find in March...until then, keep in touch and keep us posted on anything you find. P.S. Who told you that the name was Polish?..maybe they know some Swaczys themselves??
