Looking for information about my GGgrandparents who resided primarily in Clark Co., Ohio.

Mary SWACKER b. Sept. 1833 in Ohio d. aft. 1900
James M. GREGG b. abt. 1822 in Clark Co., OH d. Mar. 1886 in Clark Co., Oh

They were supposedly married Oct. 28, 1846 (she would have been 13) in Clark Co., OH.

Is any of this true? Who were their parents?

Laura Bell (Gregg) Estep/Eastep IS my Ggrandmother.
There seems to be more than one James M. GREGG in OH who was born in the early 1820's, married to a 'Mary'.

Thanks

Hey! Laura Belle GREGG EASTEP is my gr grandmother as well. My grandmother was Ethel May Eastep. Swacker research has been miserable, as well as James GREGG; yup, several James GREGG and several seem to be 'shoe maker'. As I write this I'm trying to recall where I got birth year for Mary, but I have it as 1831 instead of 1833, yet 1850 Fed Census for Clark County, shows Mary as being 21, with a two year old child, Kate. That would put her birth about 1829 and their marriage probably about 1846/1847.
If you Google Laura Belle GREGG there's a photo (circa 1874) of her that I posted. Also, at www.findagrave.com you can find a photo of John and Laura Eastep cemetery marker. I read in some message boards that John and Laura were married in Columbus, OH; I have a copy, from Clark Co Probate Court, of their marriage on 17Nov1874.

Is this Patrick McKendrick? (the '1' threw me)

If so, Hi!

I now have Mary's birth as Apr. 1833. Came from 1900 (1st Ward,Springfield,Clark Co., Page 106) census where she's living with George and Kate DONOVAN her daughter an son-in-law.

John & Laura were married in Clarke Co., OH. Have a fuzzy copy of the license and the return. I have found additional info on James M. Gregg. I'm on the road right now but will dump more next week.

Yup, it is I (the dismick1 is for Ancestry); I'll scan the marr cert I have and put it in email ... it's a pretty clear copy. found it interesting that Eastep is spelled Estepp and John "made his mark". I recently saw the 1900FCS where Mary is living with Kate and George. As you said, though, there is a bunch of JM GREGG with Mary's ... all very confusing. She was certainly very young to be getting married ... very confusing. OK, be safe out there.

Surnames: SWACKER, GREGG
No real evidence exists for the origin of Swacker. All that is known is that Mary Swacker claimed her parents were both from Virginia. My guess is that Swacker is a distorted spelling of something else. TWO Swacker surnames (relatives of Mary Gregg?) are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census of Clark County...both in Springfield Township. Margaret Swacker (bc. 1832) is living with James and Lydia Dallas. William Swacker (bc. 1836) is living with James and Mary McBeth. Records show that Margaret Swacker married Charles F. King at CLARK COUNTY in late 1850.

James M Gregg fought in the Civil War and his wife Mary applied for a pension after his death. Apparently, James M. Gregg (bc. 1822) was born in RICHLAND COUNTY OH to Abel Gregg and Hannah (DESELMS). This Abel Gregg traces back to a John Gregg & Elizabeth (COOKE) in the late 1600's in VIRGINIA. Abel Gregg is the only person named Gregg listed as living in RICHLAND COUNTY in the 1820 U.S. Census of Ohio.

Some have suggested Uriah Gregg as the possible father of James M. Gregg. Uriah Gregg is living in COLUMBIANA COUNTY OH in 1830 before moving to RICHLAND COUNTY OH by 1840. The census record from 1830 does not support James M Gregg as Uriah's son based on the identity/births of his other sons. Uriah Gregg also traces back to a John Gregg & Elizabeth (COOKE) in late 1600's VIRGINIA.

No census record exists for Abel Gregg in 1830. All that is known is that he died at SENECA COUNTY OH in August 1833. His wife Hannah died in 1865. The father of Abel Gregg (Samuel Gregg) died at LOGAN COUNTY OH in 1843. This Samuel Greg migrated to Ohio around 1800 and was in ROSS COUNTY OH at that time. He fought in the Revolutionary War and left Virginia to claim a land warrant. Samuel was in BELMONT COUNTY OH in 1810.
