Swaby Family in Mandeville, Jamaica
My Dad's Mother was Agnes Swaby and she is buried in the Episcopal Church yard in Mandeville, Jamaica, West Indies. She married Edward Woode and he died there about 1900. My father, Alva Vivian Woode was their first child and was born there in l896. Any information about the Swaby family would be appreciated. On the marriage license record of Agnes and Edward it lists Horatio Swaby as her father. His birthplace and birthdate would be most appreciated as well as the name of his wife. Thanks.

Re: Swaby Family in Mandeville, Jamaica
I am researching Anne Margaret Eleanor Swaby who married Frederick Peat in 1842 in Jamaica. She was the daughter of James Joseph Swaby of Jamaica. Any information would help - looking for antecedents and descendents.

Re: Swaby Family in Mandeville, Jamaica
The only information I have is that my Great Grandfather was Horatio Swaby. His daughter,Susan Agnes Agatha Swaby was my Grandmother and she married Edward Charles Woode. Agnes had a sister Catherine, who had a son, Errrol Swaby, who was a first cousin to my Dad, Alva Wood. Some records have listed at least 3 brothers for Agnes and Catherine but I have not seen the proof I need for their names, etc. That is about all I know about the Swaby line that is my direct line. If we all keep up the quest perhaps it will all come together soon. Glad to hear from you.

Re: Swaby Family in Mandeville, Jamaica
The Swabys that I am researching were originally from Yorkshire, England. They owned a property, Montpelier, which I think is in Clarendon. James Joseph Swaby was a governor of Jamaica in the 1700's, his son James Joseph II lived at Montpelier and returned to England and died there. James Joseph II's daughter Ann Margaret Eleanor Swaby married Frederick Peat of St. Ann's Parish, property included Tripoli which was near Dry Harbour (now called Discovery Bay). Ann Margaret Eleanor had no siblings. James Joseph II may or may not have had siblings, given what I have found out, most likely sisters. The James Joseph I generation may have brought other Swaby relatives, as there are several Swaby families in the 1700s in Jamaica. That is what I have been able to piece together from Jamaican Family Search Free pages and Ancestry.com.
