This is interesting as I too haa a 19th century Peat groom-Swaby bride marriage in my family and in my family too, the Swaby bride has exotic origins, in this case "Bumba East Indies" believed to be Mumbai, formerly Bombay.

Caroline Swaby married Benjamin Joseph Peat 13 Jun 1886 at Bow.

Thank you

Simply because a person was born in a foreign location, does not necessarily make them of that particular nationality. It is good to recall that Britain had tens of thousands of soldiers and civil servants working and living in their colonies world wide. Some did marry into the native populations and others married into the families of other British transplants. With colonies all over, and people traveling widely on the sea routes the diaspora and intermingling of ethnic groups increased to be sure and it is really difficult to sort it out. Surnames are always a clue and the Swaby name is of Saxon origins. British records of their civil servants is not all on line, but there is some information - so checking that route is one suggestion.

Hi there, Caroline Peat (Nee Swaby) was my great grandmother
My grandad Thomas Frederick Peat had told me when i was younger that his mother Caroline was born in the East Indies but not exactly where, and when you are young you
dont think to ask, as far as i know his grandparents came
England and i know from infomation i have found that
Carolines father was a platelayer for the railways, so must presume that his work took him to the East Indies and that is why Caroline was born there, as the rest of the children were born in England. Carolines mother Caroline (nee Styles)
then married Johnson and had more children in England.
How are you related to the Swaby/Peat,s
I do have a Photograph of Caroline Peat i would be able to scan for you if you wish.
Regards
Jan

Hi Jan this is so exciting as I have waited so long to get definite confirmation that Caroline was actually born in the East Indies, I would love any more info & a photo would be great. It looks like your grandfather & mine (Samuel John) were brothers. My father John is still alive & I will be seeing him tomorrow & he will be very interested in this contact with you. Please let me know of any other Peat's that you know.
Thanks again for contacting me
Kind regard
Janet Harrison (new Peat)

Hi Janet,
I have a Samuel J Peat born 1898 as my grandads brother
If he is the same one, then John would be my fathers cousin my dad being Raymond born 1933, but afraid to say died in 1997 as did his brother Thomas (Tommy) in 1983.
I knew a few of your dads uncles and aunts and cousins.
But alas not many of them are with us now.
You can contact me my email is janiceridge@ymail.com
instead of going through messages.
regards
Jan Ridge (nee Janice Peat)
