What I have in my records for the elder JJS is taken from Jamaica Church of England Parish Register Transcripts 1664-1880 St. Elizabeth Baptisms/Marriages/Burials 1705-1820 that I found on familysearch.org. Image 177 shows page record of Burials of White Persons in 1811 wherein the line "Aug 15th at New River Joseph James Swaby Esq & Custos aged 78" is entered.
Taking 78 from the year 1811 when he died puts him born 1733, which is very close to 1735 for
Ruth Burton. I know I have run across a newspaper mention of the death of one of the JJS's, but cannot say which and of course, cannot locate right now. I may have it stored digitally. I will look.
My Thomas is mentioned in the will, yes, the son of Martha Wilson Brown. Not a full blood brother to Joseph, but a brother albeit never called a beloved son by his father based on the will.
Seemed like a weird deal created and executed in the will for Thomas. Wonder why he was offered and took the deal? Can't say I understand the times back then. Maybe JJS questioned his paternity.
Do you find researching with newspapers to be fruitful? I wasn't sure it was worth paying for access to yet another site.
Thanks for your replies!
update to my post: Obit for the elder JJS is in Jamaican Newspaper "Royal Gazette" of Aug 1811. Found it shared in the messages and photo files of genealogy group I belong to. It was brief "At New River, in St. Elizabeth, on the 13th inst. at the advanced age of 78 years, the Hon. Joseph James Swaby, Custos of that parish, and many years one of it Representatives in the Honourable House of Assembly".
