Hi,
I also know that Svalina family has it roots in Italy, but I don't know which part of Italy.
I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of my relatives has found in church archive that Svalina family came from Italy to Dalmatia. She couldn't find a reason for this migration, but one can be running from a plague in Italy (although this is only a speculation). Šibenik is name of the town where Svalinas arrived and lived there. There is still a village near Šibenik with name Svalina. After some time Svalinas are migrating to Bosnia due to a lot of unpopulated country. There are some Svalina families in Bugojno (central Bosnia). Big part of this group migrated to Germany during last 30 years.
There are also some Svalina families in Croatian towns Đjakovo, Varazdin and Split.

My grandfather came to america in 1905 from the croatian island of Lissa (Vis). His name was Paul Svalina, he then changed his name to Paul Swalina , why I don't know. He had two brothers one's name was Nick. I am also distant cousin to a Nick Svalina who resides in Wisconsin. We are the only branch of the family who spells our name with a "w" instead of a "v" but we are kin. I with several other Svalina family members reside in Chicago.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE FAMILY TREE THAT I AM WORKING ON FOR SVALINA. I AM INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT PETER OR ANTHONY SVALINA. ANTHONY WOULD HAVE BEEN KNOWN AS ANTE (ANTHONY SVALINA) HE ATTENDED ST. JEROME'S CROATIAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CHICAGO LOCATED AT 28TH AND PRINCETON. I BELIEVE THAT HE WAS BORN AROUND 1888 IN EITHER CAPORICE OR CRIVAC IN PRESENT DAY CROATIA IN THE PROVINCE OF DALMATIA. I HAVE SEEN HIS NAME POP UP OFTEN IN MY RESEARCH AND IF HE WORKED IN SOUTH AFRICA MINES, MY GREAT GRANDFATHER MARTIN SVALINA DIS AS WELL. I AM STILL WORKING ON HOW THEY WERE RELATED. I KNOW THAT MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS BORN IN 1863 SO I AM NOT SURE IF THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BROTHERS BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN 25 YEARS APART. OF COURSE, MARTIN WAS THE OLDEST BROTHER OF THE CAPORICE VILLAGE BROTHERS. ANTHONY COULD HAVE BEEN A COUSIN. I AM NOT SURE. I WILL GET BACK WITH YOU ON WHO PETER WAS BUT I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO MY GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS WERE I.E. MARTIN SVALINA'S PARENTS NAMES.
