Classification: Query
Surnames: Suter ; Suder
Greetings to all Suter researchers,

I'd like to make contact with ALL of the folks on this board who are tracking and researching a Suter / Suder line, who is believed to have arrived in the Colonies in the 1700s, from Scotland. I have already made contact with some folks here, and know something about their Suter lines and how they do--and do not--connect with my own.

Here is a small portion of what I believe to be accurate:

My line begins here with John Suter, who came from Scotland and lived in Southampton County, VA. If the documents I have reviewed are correct, this John Suter--and not his son, John--married at least two times. His probable second wife was likely a Hannah Smith, and 'Smith' may even be her maiden name.

Based on a hand-written, genealogical document--created in a ledger by my great-great-grandfather, John J. Suter, of Marion Co., MO--John, the emigrant, had at least six children.

His son, John--b. 1755, in VA--married Elizabeth Stringfellow. They are also believed to have had at least six children. They left VA for KY, and are believed to have lived in either Woodford and/or Shelby Cos., KY. This John Suter d. in October, 1820.

John, b. 1781? and son of John and Elizabeth, married Elizabeth Asbury. He d. ca. 1848, in Scotland Co., MO. they had at least three sons. Their eldest son, my 3GGrandfather, was Verdner Suter.

Verdner was b. 1806, in KY. He m. Matilda Baskett, of Shelby Co., KY. Verdner d. in Marion Co., MO, in 1894. They had at least nine children, and their eldest son, John J. Suter, b. 1834--who was my 2GGrandfather--was both interested in family history and wrote down what he was able to learn from family members.

John J. Suter was b. in IL (probably Sangamon Co., IL, based on family lore--as this is where they were when his younger brother died by drowning.). He m. Lucy A. Smith. Lucy Ann's parents were Francis Smith and his wife, Elizabeth(?) Morris.

They are believed to have had eight children. One of their daughters, Lula B. Suter, who was b. in Palmyra, Marion Co., MO, in 1861, was my great grandmother. She was close to my mother and my aunt for over 40 years, and d. in St Louis Co., MO, in 1954.

If you see any possible link, or would like to know what I know about any of the collateral lines of these Suters, kindly write to me directly:

My cousin, Vane Suter, is also on this board, and he has done a DNA test for the Suter study already at FamilyTreeDNA.com. If you match Vane, then you are also of my line.

If you match this line somehow, kindly contact me. let's share what we have and see what else we can learn about this line. Thanks.

Nicholas
